all three make 16 look pretty pedestrian at 529 yards. morikawa makes it just short of the green from a bunker and scheffler hits driver, pitching wedge and he's got an 8 footer for birdie. homa hit it to the right--but still has a birdie putt.

scheffler makes the birdie putt. he's four under on the back and four under for the championship.

ricky on the green on the 9th. a two putt for the one round u.s. open scoring record. schauffele is seven under with some holes to play too.

scheffler making these closing holes look simple. conditions are soft and when you put the ball in the fairway it's not that difficult to do. especially when you're the number one player in the world.

xander is now eight under thru 17. the par three ninth hole in front of him. a par to tie ricky's record. a birdie to set the major championship scoring record.

yep. it was his worst putt of the day they said. i'm sure it was.

Schauffele, Fowler make U.S. Open history
In the first 122 U.S. Opens, no player shot below 63. Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele both shot 62s on Thursday — 15 minutes apart.

rory making a statement early. he's about to go to four under after seven holes after hitting a gorgeous shot on that hole. 245 yards out and he ends up three feet under the hole. if he can keep it together he might have the lead by the time xander and ricky tee it up tomorrow.

a tap in birdie for mcilroy on eight. five under now.

DJ's at five under too. the afternoon group might actually have the better half of the draw when all is said and done tomorrow night.

DJ shoots a 64. rory is at six under thru 17. they get to go out early tomorrow and i figure one of them will have the lead when the two record holders get on the course. rory's been in control of his round from the get-go. DJ must be hitting solid shots tee to green as well. with the conditions out there the course couldn't hold up to the onslaught from some of the game's best.

scheffler bogeyed his last hole with a bad three putt. DJ bogeyed his last hole and now rory's in danger of doing the same. his only bad shot of the day and it was from only 165 yards out. now he's in the deep stuff on 18.

then he goes under it and leaves it in the cabbage. gets it out on the second attempt--but he's got 12 feet for bogey.

it's a one putt bogey and a five under 65. he won't feel good about that hole but he'll find some solace in holing that putt. a double bogey there might have ruined dinner.

rory and DJ going backwards. DJ in a semi-collapse right now. took a quad on the second hole--but came back to birdie the third. still. edit on the rory going backwards post. he just birdied 13 to get even for the day. i haven't seen any of the action yet--but they said that the course was going to play tougher today. i'm sure that'll be the case. we'll see how the golfers handle it.

DJ bogeys four. he's done. you don't come back from snowmans in the u.s. open unless you're tiger woods. he might have had one when he won by all those strokes at pebble all those years ago.

tony finau going forward. three under for the day and five under for the championship. rory drops another shot on 17.

charley hoffman having a day too. four under in his round so far and three under for the championship. he's been known to hang in there when he gets into contention. but overall i think fowler and schauffele are feeling pretty good about how things are playing out with the late/early threesomes.
