Ok, but that's because of the way shit is, not that it can't or won't. I'm the absolutely posted child for what is wrong with the program. APATHY.

I was a massive Gopher fan going up, big Clem fan in my 20s, 1997 was one of my funnest Fan sporting years. Watching Gopher hoops listening to one of the most underrated awesome color guys ever, Jim Dutcher, great memories. I went to Indy 97, was awesome in spite of losing.

As I aged, kids in sports etc, decline of the program etc, I became less and less in tune and following them. Lately, just them sucking has led to almost full apathy for me. I barely follow them. Which, stuns me.

Terrible crowds, no buzz, that's why they ain't making money. Is there any hope?
Imo their only hope for relevancy is to hire a PJ Fleck type of coach, a salesman if you will. Gotta have someone who can land a few good NIL players every year and then hopefully be able to get themselves in the top 8 or 9 in the conference on a regular basis and occasionally get a decent NCAA seeding come tournament time. Ben Johnson isn't that guy and this isn't going to get better until he's gone.

Not sure there is anyone waiting in the wings to take over, but that said I remember the relief when Monson was let go mid-season. He has to be gone after the season though, the program is in the worst shape I’ve ever seen.
If nothing else, it will at least show the fans that they realize this is unacceptable and that they care/have a pulse. Letting him coach the rest of the way when it looks like we could go winless in conference play gives off the impression to fans that you don’t care, which will damage goodwill. Ben has been here long enough where it would be acceptable to let him go midseason, he’s had years to show progress

Good points. There was an emphasis on him to recruit top players in state. He embraced that priority and it never came to fruition. Then the focus began recruiting with the NIL rules and he's never been able to figure that out either.

I still think it comes down to coaching basic fundamentals average college teams can execute, and he can't do that either. We've heard players love playing for him. Sure, the ones that are there probably think he's a nice guy. But talented players do not want to play for him or the program. It's a dumpster fire.

I really think Coyle doesn't want to upset Minnesota guys like Garcia and Fox midseason, so they'll keep BJ for the rest of the season and then fire him.

It’s just time for a new coach. I don’t blame Ben Johnson. He seems like a good guy. He just should’ve never been hired.

Per Charley Walters:
—Alumni and assorted boosters are pushing Ryan Saunders, the ex-Gopher who is an assistant for the Denver Nuggets, for the Gophers head job if there is a coaching change at season’s end.

What's your thought on this Hoop? Certainly better than Ben but tbh it doesn't excite me much...

I would pass. Coyle needs to hit on this next hire. Saunders hasn't proven anything.

They could do worse than Ryan Saunders, and they have (see: Johnson, Ben), but they need to hire someone who has actual experience running a college program in the NIL era.

No less than they could at Wisconsin who puts in the resources to at least be respectable. The barn has enough seats to do the job and it will sellout when the product justifies it.

I said this after Pitino was fired. They took a chance on him without having much experience and going with another uninown after him was a mistake. If they do the same with Saunders, look out.

Look out for what? The program is at the bottom already.

Did not see this coming after an 0-6 conference start. Gotta give Ben Johnson some credit here.

It's so embarrassing. I was able to watch last part of the game and it's a nice win, and good for them. Would be cool if they can turn shit around. But Jesus Christ I don't know what's more embarrassing - storming the court or this moronic "barnyard" shit they have done there so long. It's got to be one of the gheyest fans thing ever, almost as bad as the skol chant.

I don't blame the students for wanting to go on the court. It's the "adults" who join in that make me shake my head.

They have MSU next. I expect a return to reality. I also think Coyle is scared shitless at the possibility of firing Ben, he's just itching for an excuse to give him another year.

They've actually beaten two ranked teams recently. First time since 2020.
