Figured he wouldn’t leave there. Smart move by him. I give it two years before the Bucs realize it’s a mistake but good for him.

At least they have Evans back for him to chuck it up to because that’s how he ate this year. Just like Johnny Football.

I always thought him staying made the most sense for both sides, but then it wasn’t happening and I wondered if he would make it to FA. But this makes sense.

Not saying I want him back, but he was a favorite of mine. Probably at or very near the end of the line for him.

What a crap trade that ended up being for Seattle. The Jets actually got something right on that one.

Interesante, I guess it would all depend on if we trade up in the draft for a QB, because them cupboards are going to get bare.

What will he fetch for a pick(s)? I have a hard time believing it either.

I wish they'd get rid of the franchise tag.

And quite honestly, I don't see how such a thing can be legal in the USA.
It's been 32 years since one of MN's four major sports teams has been to the Championship/Superbowl.
Every single year is failure until we win one. 4 teams, 32 years. That's roughly 128 consecutive failed seasons.

Regarding "legality," the whole thing is collectively bargained so that's how it's legal.
If someone wanted to nitpick they could say the same thing about drafting in general, restricted free agency, the rookie wage scale.

But what's your issue with the franchise tag?
I like it.

Getting an average of what the top 10 salaries by position isn’t something I’d complain about unless I was someone like Jefferson who will reset the market.

Players hardly ever play on it though.
It's really more of a tool to ensure that the original team can retain rights and provide a favorable negotiating position.

(Leaving RBs out of this conversation as they have their own unique money problem)

Well, that makes sense I guess.
All solid points.

People use it as a loophole to get more time to work out a deal beyond the deadline. Disagree with that on it's face but it also puts the player at a huge disadvantage in negotiating when that end date is removed.

Also, if a player wants to leave I really struggle finding it OK to force them to stay. Signing a contract to stay somewhere of your own free will is one thing. But shoehorning something in like the Franchise Tag onto a rookie contract "or else you can just not play in the NFL" just seems really, really off. Don't like that at all.

One could say, the rookie had absolutely nothing to do with what was collectively bargained so why would they be beholden to it? That seems really illegal to me to force someone to do something just because some other person bargained on their behalf without their input or approval to do so.

I understand why most fans like it. Just don't think the positives out way the negative.

A lot of intriguing free agents just hit the market. Eagles released Maddox, bills released white, poyer, and Morse. Any of those guys would be quality additions to the roster
