He's the Captain of the team. Gets a once in a lifetime contract. Takes up space in the lineup providing zero power. Hometown kid. Never won in the postseason in over 4 tries? Then you guys wonder why Twins fans think he's a phony.
Ernie Banks played in almost 2500 games. Never made the playoffs. Most years they were around the 7-8th best team in the NL, so even if the wildcard existed, it wouldn't have mattered much. Not saying Mauer is Ernie Banks, but unless you're a starting pitcher, it's pretty tough to have much control over wins/losses in baseball.

Today’s Hall of Fame voters, however, are tough.

Mauer will get credit for his good numbers as a catcher but it should be noted that, even when catcher was his primary position, he started a lot of games at first base or as the team’s designated hitter.

Mauer only caught 100 games five times in his career. His 921 career games behind the dish are just 154th in the history of the game. Compare that to Yadier Molina, who retired last fall and is considered a strong future Hall of Fame candidate. Molina caught 2,184 games, more than double Mauer’s total and 4th most in history. Only Buck Ewing, a 19th-century player, has fewer games while donning the tools of ignorance for a Hall of Fame backstop than Mauer’s 921.

Mauer also took a lot of questionable days off and wasn’t regarded as the toughest player out there. As a matter fact teammates often questioned behind the scenes whether or not he was really injured at times. Regardless of what teammates said, or will say about him publicly, he wasn’t the most respected guy in the locker room, and thought of as too soft.

So "Let's Play Two" Mr. Cub, Mike Trout, and Joe Mauer.

Yep

I remember people put a big emphasis on BA in the very old days. Now, of course, we know it doesn’t mean anything. It’s all about Home runs and RBIs. The difference between a 275 hitter for a season and 300 hitter is one more hit every eight games. Lol

How many playoff games did that team win?

And that cut and paste from DH is from Cooperstown Cred, which is part of a larger text that reaches the verdict that Mauer probably belongs in the HOF.

That's a good point. However I can't recount off the top of my head who the highest paid player was on that team. Maybe Cruz or Buxton? Donaldson and Kenta came the next year. I think Santana was already gone. Maybe Berrios or Odorizzi?

Reminds me of that quote from Bull Durham

"Know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It's 25 hits. 25 hits in 500 at bats is 50 points, okay? There's 6 months in a season, that's about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week - just one - a gorp... you get a groundball, you get a groundball with eyes... you get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week... and you're in Yankee Stadium."

It's been 32 years since one of MN's four major sports teams has been to the Championship/Superbowl.
Every single year is failure until we win one. 4 teams, 32 years. That's roughly 128 consecutive failed seasons.

Batting average just don’t mean anything like someone said the difference between a 250 hitter, and a 300 hitter is one flare a week. No GM nowadays puts any emphasis on BA because they know it’s a worthless stat. Some sites that track statistics nowadays don’t even post BA.

Juicing doesn't effect average though does it?

Mauer had only 1 year in his entire career that he hit more than 13 HR's and he hit 28 that year. Over double his next highest year. He hit triple the HR's that year than his average per year.

He juiced. Then got paid to be a 30 HR player and couldn't even do half that. Mauer to the HOF is the biggest joke I've ever seen and I now have zero respect for the baseball HOF. It's a trash heap full of players that don't belong. Just put Pete Rose in at this point.

That season does raise suspicion but I would be shocked if it ever came out that Joe juiced. I don't recall ever hearing anyone (other than here!) suggest he did.

MLB Hall of Fame: Class of 2024 voting trending toward four inductees, with Gary Sheffield too close to call
It's looking like Adrian Beltre, Joe Mauer, Todd Helton and Billy Wagner will get the call Tuesday

I’m with you Gus. Joe is a class act, never makes excuses, great athlete, humble. Just an all time great Minnesota athlete.

He's up to 84.5% with almost half of known ballots. If he doesn't make it, it will be an oddly appropriate classic Minnesota collapse.

But what I don't think is fair is labeling HIM a phony. The guy LOVED sports and was an incredible athlete in THREE sports. Never came across as entitled. Never acted arrogant. Never was a problem in the clubhouse. Just an introverted personality who preferred to just go out and play a game that he loved and was fortunate to be able to do so for his entire career in front of friends and family in his home state. Many here wanted him to be something he wasn't and when he didn't fit the way they wanted him to that's when the negativity started to take hold. We can be disappointed that he was not part of a championship team, but thinking he was a phony just doesn't make sense...
His MVP season was phony. What are we even talking about here?

I get it: "He's One Of US", but some Twins fans aren't from MN. We don't have the natural bias.
His MVP year wasn't a phony, it was an outlier. Many MVP's have had years like this. Maybe not to the extent of Mauer, but close. I don't think it's that abnormal. I could be wrong.
Nailed it!
Put 'er in the ole vise.
