Re: 2024 MLB Hot Stove
The Angels did nothing with this guy in the lineup. Was it worth it? I suppose he helped increase ticket sales and lots of merchandise sales, but if their goal was to win a championship they failed miserably.

The only Twins news revolves around them shedding more salary. Super.

If Jorge can bring us a number 2 or 3 starter in return that's about the best we can expect.

It is obviously an insane amount of money out. I wonder what they project as increased revenue directly or indirectly related to signig him.

Kind of. It's a lot of money to spend on one player. Not sure how the other "superstars" (ie. Betts and Freeman) will react to having someone on the payroll who makes 3-4x as much as they do.

I assume it's just LA clearing roster space. They probably want to get at least a chance of something in return, instead of just releasing the 2 players in question. But I could be wrong. The Lizard King wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 3:12 pm Can any strong baseball minds tell me what the hell is going on here?

Well, they're halfway there. All they need to do is throw 150 IP with a 3.00 ERAThe Lizard King wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 3:11 pmKind of. It's a lot of money to spend on one player. was just going to post this. i wonder what the cash now offers were? the guy is probably still going to be making 10-20 million a year with the endorsements and has a hundred million dollars in the bank already--but that's a huge amount of the salary to be deferred.

He gets to work in CA and pay high taxes on the $2M per year but can move elsewhere (probably South Dakota!) once the big $ kicks in and save ~$10m per year.weimy froob wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 5:04 pmwas just going to post this. i wonder what the cash now offers were? the guy is probably still going to be making 10-20 million a year with the endorsements and has a hundred million dollars in the bank already--but that's a huge amount of the salary to be deferred.

i thought about that but i don't know if that works. maybe--but i think you have to pay taxes in the state where you earn the money. you could be right though.j-one wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:35 amHe gets to work in CA and pay high taxes on the $2M per year but can move elsewhere (probably South Dakota!) once the big $ kicks in and save ~$10m per year.weimy froob wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 5:04 pmwas just going to post this. i wonder what the cash now offers were? the guy is probably still going to be making 10-20 million a year with the endorsements and has a hundred million dollars in the bank already--but that's a huge amount of the salary to be deferred.

i just read something where deferred payments are not viewed as salary--but as a bonus--so where you live would be your tax rate. he won't be living in california when he gets these would be my guess.

maybe. there's a california law that says that if you defer your income for 10 or more years and you're not living in the state then they can't tax that money.D_H wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 11:51 amThe government taxes bonuses at a much higher level.weimy froob wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:53 am i just read something where deferred payments are not viewed as salary--but as a bonus--so where you live would be your tax rate. he won't be living in california when he gets these would be my guess.

Ok. I’m just my work bonus I get once a year for sales I’ve created. I only get 58% of it the government gets the rest!!weimy froob wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 12:15 pmmaybe. there's a california law that says that if you defer your income for 10 or more years and you're not living in the state then they can't tax that money.D_H wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 11:51 amThe government taxes bonuses at a much higher level.weimy froob wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:53 am i just read something where deferred payments are not viewed as salary--but as a bonus--so where you live would be your tax rate. he won't be living in california when he gets these would be my guess.

Bonuses get taxed at the same rate as regular earnings unless you are below the 22% bracket (if you are, then bonuses are taxed 22%). If they took more, its because the bonus would have caused you to jump a tax bracket.D_H wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 1:16 pmOk. I’m just my work bonus I get once a year for sales I’ve created. Giants president claims they made Ohtani an offer that was "nearly identical", but I'd guess that's more damage control than anything else.
Then they went out and gave Korean league star Jung Hoo Lee $113 million over 6 years.
Twins seem to have zero interest in signing players from Korea/Japan after how hard they got burned by Nishioka and Park.

Twins also signed Nishioka and Park when they were late in their 20s and had zero patience for them.feekdogg wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 7:31 am Giants president claims they made Ohtani an offer that was "nearly identical", but I'd guess that's more damage control than anything else.

Park still plays in Korea. Both of them went back home and were mostly fine players, just not up to the level of MLB competition.Hornets wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 5:06 pmNot going to take the time to find out but I'm curious how their baseball careers went after leaving Minnesota.bubu dubu. wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 5:05 pmTwins also signed Nishioka and Park when they were late in their 20s and had zero patience for them.feekdogg wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 7:31 am Giants president claims they made Ohtani an offer that was "nearly identical", but I'd guess that's more damage control than anything else.
