Mahle to the Rangers, 2 years 22 million guaranteed. I figured the Twins would try and bring him back, but that's a pretty big number for a guy who won't be ready to pitch until sometime next summer, most likely.

Twins also signed Nishioka and Park when they were late in their 20s and had zero patience for them.

While it was strange that the Twins (who lost 103 games in '16) gave up on Park so quickly, I doubt he had much of a future in the majors. There wasn't really a market for him before he came to MN, and obviously no one else ever tried to get him after the Twins cut him loose.weimy froob wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 7:15 pmted's take.Phil Leotardo wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 7:29 pmPark still plays in Korea. Yeah. That one stings hard. Especially since both Steer and Encarnacion-Strand have proved that they are MLB hitters already. And they're both right-handed hitters with some pop, which is something lacking in the lineup right now.Hornets wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 7:47 pmWhat a colossal disaster the trade for him ended up being...ughPhil Leotardo wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 6:26 pm https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/ ... -deal.html

I'm curious to see what the Twins think they can get for Kepler. I'm just not seeing the appeal of what should be a backup RFer/DH that just turned 30.

Re: 2024 MLB Hot Stove
The good version of Kepler is definitely a solid MLB starter, but I doubt they get much for him without throwing in a prospect or two. Best case scenario would probably be a swap for another team's pending FA. A #4 starter, say.

Twins Daily has speculations about the Marlins/Twins working on another deal for pitching (Jesus Luzardo). He's good, but good gravy:
Option 1. Brooks Lee, Wallner and a low-level prospect.
Option 2. Emmanuel Rodriguez, Julien and Kepler.
Option 3. Jeffers, Polanco, Larnach and the pick they got for Gray.

3 leaves you with garbage at catcher (TD says this probably isn't enough to get it done anyway).weimy froob wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 7:55 amwhich option is less painful? i'd go three i guess. 2 then 1?feekdogg wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 7:41 am Twins Daily has speculations about the Marlins/Twins working on another deal for pitching (Jesus Luzardo). I like Luzardo. It feels like he's been in the league forever, but he's only 26. I think he'd be a good fit here. Solid middle rotation guy, high K rate.

Re: 2024 MLB Hot Stove
Maybe if they "splurged" and signed more guys like Gray, they wouldn't have to give up so many prospects to get decent pieces back. If the team isn't performing by the ASG, trade for prospects yourself, and if the Grays end up leading in FA, you still get draft picks (essentially prospects) in return.
Even if you sign a Juan Soto, you can still trade him for pieces and another team will pay the rest of his contract.

They cut payroll, I’m used to it. If they deal Julien one year after dealing the only other guy in their system that doesn’t strike out half the time, I may have to become a truly casual fanweimy froob wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 8:18 am i'd rather they have to find another catcher than lose julien.

Re: 2024 MLB Hot Stove
Dodgers are supposedly dropping 300 million on Yamamoto.
1 billion bucks on two of Japan's finest.
On one hand, I get it.
On the orher, it's such a massive outlay for guys who don't compete on the same level as guys who play on an island that is split with Haiti.

They'll go 152-10. And get swept in the NLDS by the Brewers.

BF is a Twins Daily equivalent so it's not even a "rumor" at this point, but it makes some sense:

I was listening to a sports business podcast the other day that suggested because Ohtani is such a superstar in Japan and that region, there's a chance the Dodgers could make enough deals in the first 3 years of Ohtani's tenure to make all $700M back.feekdogg wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 10:12 pm Dodgers are supposedly dropping 300 million on Yamamoto.

I wonder what the calculation is for Yamamoto?
Another item they mentioned (before the Yamamoto signing) is what this might do long-term for them acquiring Japanese stars - they'll have an entire generation of kids who want to wear Dodger Blue like their hero.
