Denver is still terrifying when Murray is healthy. But I love the way the Wolves match up with them. Two awesome centers to throw at Jokic (I don't think Reid quite has the size), two elite point-of-attack defenders to throw at Murray (McDaniels and NAW), and a player nobody on Denver can guard (Edwards).
Denver still has Jokic, who is the best player in the world by a significant margin (crazy to type that out) and can go for 34-12-10 on a mediocre night. But Wolves probably have the best chance of anyone of dethroning the champs.

In the first 34 seasons, was there any other besides 2003-04 in which this happened? I do remember that we had to go on quite a late-season tear just to overtake San Antonio for the division -- back when there were still only four divisions and winning one guaranteed you a top-2 seed in the conference, I believe.
So, the time at #1 might have been only a few days or so.

I don’t know if we have the top roster, but we just may have the most talented starting 5 in the NBA.Moses Scurry wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 12:11 pm Just assume we can keep our top 8 players intact, what's our window? Conley maybe 1-2 years. Gobert?

Yeah. And it’s a roster that has played very few games together as a unit. There’s a lot of room for improvement.witljon wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 4:00 pmI don’t know if we have the top roster, but we just may have the most talented starting 5 in the NBA.Moses Scurry wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 12:11 pm Just assume we can keep our top 8 players intact, what's our window? This is pretty good, right?
For Towns individually, that 1.4 defensive win shares is more in 14 games than he earned in 29 games last year (1.1). And if extrapolated over 82 games, would double his best defensive win share season ever.

Don't look now, but Timberwolves had best monthly record for NBA, NHL or MLB team in Minnesota sports history
According to OptaSTATS, which apparently specializes in stuff like this, the Timberwolves' 13-2 record (.867) in November was the best month ever for an NBA or NHL team or the Twins in Minnesota's major league history.
The Minneapolis Lakers — winners of five NBA titles (and another in the NBL) — had 13-3 records (.813) in consecutive Januarys: 1950 and 1951.
The stats site also gives the Wild credit for Minnesota's top hockey month, but that's distorted by the NHL marketing scam that doesn't put an overtime loss in the loss column.
The Wild were 12-2-2 (.813) in points in April 2022, but 12-4 (.750) in actual wins-losses.
The best month ever for the Twins was 22-6 (.786) in June 1991, a season that ended with a second World Series title.

We're playing much better than I thought we would be, and yet I still can't let myself get overly excited. I just keep waiting for the inevitable.

Re: How Good Are We **Poll**
If by inevitable you mean not winning a title, then you’re probably right. Teams seldom go from fringe to champions in one year. Usually you need to go on a good run or two before you climb the mountain.
But if by inevitable you mean falling apart and being a bad/mediocre team, I don’t see it. Unless they get killed by more serious injuries than they’ve been hit with so far.
This teams success is repeatable and they have enough depth to withstand the loss of anyone for a short time. I doubt they’ll continue at a .777 winning percentage all year, but threatening 60 wins and a top-3 seed is very much within this team’s reach.

So what you are saying is we've blasted through the toughest part of the schedule already at 14-4 and it's a cakewalk to 74-8. I agree.

Towns last 12 games (after the rough shooting start the first 6):
115/186 from the floor. 61.8%
29/56 from 3. 51.8%
54/59 from the line. 91.5%
I don’t believe anyone has ever authored a 60/50/90 season in NBA history. Certainly not on any reasonable volume. Not suggesting he’ll maintain this all year, but he’s on a hell of a hot streak right now.
Also, 109 rebounds (9.1), 38 assists (3.2), 12 steals (1), and 10 blocks (.8).
He does have 38 turnovers (3.2) and 43 fouls (3.6) over that span, so it’s not all perfect and there is some room for improvement.
And the Wolves are 10-2 over these 12 games. The wolves, for the most part, carried him to the 4-2 start. He’s paid it back since then.

It's this. It's just ingrained in me now to expect something bad when things appear to turn a corner.Beef Supreme wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 7:47 am Unless they get killed by more serious injuries than they’ve been hit with so far.
That game against OKC, seeing Edwards in the air with his head appearing to be above the rim and watching his entire body turn sideways out of control, I just slumped over in my seat in horror thinking the absolute worst.
