not happening for ricky early. he's in a spot of bother here on the second with his third shot after not birdying the first.

ricky is closer to the hole after that chip than clark is after his putt. rory has a chance to grab the lead with his next putt from about 12 feet.

clark the only player to birdie hole number six. he's at 12 under going into the tough seventh. rory with a tap in par on that hole. scheffler's championship might hinge on his par putt on that hole. from about 12 feet. another missed putt. he better have an under par eighth. preferably eagle. clark is on the green on seven.

one bad swing/bad break and everybody in the last two groups is back in this tournament. beautiful par chip there to only lose one shot though. still's going to have the lead going into nine. i'm giving him that putt.

DJ's still in the championship too--but he has to do something special on the back besides birdying 10. edit: scratch him off as still in it after missing that putt.

Kind of a snoozer today, nobody really doing anything too exciting.

a u.s. open. pars are good. the course is set up to identify the best golfer that week. i think we're down to the two best golfers now.

i do like watching cam smith on the greens in the majors though. he can putt.

i'm counting scheffler out. he birdies this hole and 15 i'll put him back in the conversation. azinger talking about rory's par putt--"this is huge". yes it is paul.

clark playing like a champion on 14.

yeah. 16-18 is set up to identify the champion golfer. you have to hit good drives and then they're par holes. the usga doesn't want a champion who sprays his tee shots and second shot irons. it used to be long irons--but not with today's players. clark putting for eagle now. tap in birdie.

10 footer for par for clark on 15. mcilroy hits a beauty to get on the green on 16 from the rough. a long putt--but a two putt par definitely keeps him in the championship. edit: they said eight and a half foot putt. he missed.

that's a bad bogey. the only one of the day from the field. u.s. open pressure.

pressure. clark is in the bunker and leaking some oil. mcilroy has a seven footer for par and he makes it. the championship is still in doubt.

nice short iron third shot for clark. he's got a five footer for par. you'll know where his nerves are after that putt. he should make it. mcilroy launches an iron for his second shot from the second fairway and will have a putt for birdie. a two putt par will be more than acceptable.

Really disappointed that Ricky couldn't get it done today, but hope this is the springboard for him to get back to being one of golfs best players!
