okay i might have spoke too soon on DJ's chances. he shot an even par 70 today. that's a great 17 holes for him and he's still in this championship. clark is in the clubhouse at nine under.

going to be over five and a half hour rounds for the group.

rory just about aces #9 (his last hole) and has a kick in birdie to finish at eight under for the championship. should be in a real good position for the weekend. we'll see how good in about five hours.

ricky starts his round with three straight birdies. it could be his time. he'd be a popular champ for sure.

ricky's feeling it with the wand. even when he misses they look good.

schauffele makes his first birdie of the day on the sixth. still no bogeys. fowler comes up 15 feet short from nearly 30 yards with the putter and misses the par putt. the lead is down to one. he hit a poor first putt--but he's still joking with the crowd and feeling good going into the par 5 eighth.

and he birdies the eighth. it's only the second day--but i like what i see from fowler's disposition. even more from his putting stroke. he's got some big names chasing--but if he keeps rolling it i don't think a collapse is in the offing even if he starts to get a little crooked off the tee.

schauffele also bogeyed his first hole of the championship--the long seventh. three putt from 43 feet.

ricky bogeys the first two holes on the back nine. 11 with a three putt--and he wasn't joking around after that miss from five feet. xander with a putt to take the lead at 10.

the ricky rollercoaster continues. a three putt for bogey. his lag putting is hurting him today. leaving himself too long of par putts.

birdies 15. only has three pars on his scorecard today. he'll take three more on these finishing holes and go to bed as the leader of the u.s. open after 36 holes.

another bogey for fowler on 16. i think that even though he and schauffele had their record rounds yesterday that the late'/early groups had it a little easier than the early/late groups. the sun came out for their rounds this afternoon and the course has been playing harder. clark might have the lead at the end of the day with rory playing in the last group with him.

this is almost absurd. ricky birdies 17 for his 18th in two days if i'm adding up things correctly. only three pars in the round--just one on the back nine going into 18. he'll be in the last group unless it's a total disaster on the last hole. he's going to be the people's favorite going into the third round for sure.

schaffele has bogeyed three straight holes playing the 16th. has a putt for birdie--but what a disappointing stretch of golf for him.

ricky burns the edge on 18--but it's a par and he's going to be the leader going into the third round. with the crowd behind him as well. scheffler is five under now and lurking. going to be a fun day of golf tomorrow.

well worth watching the feature group until the end. xander birdies 17 and 18 to shoot an even par 70. he's right there.

big change in scoring day 1 to 2. USGA will let those greens really dry out for the final 2 rounds.
They dont like 10 under for scores in this event.

Rickie Fowler holds lead halfway through a major for first time at U.S. Open

Rickie Fowler was flamboyant as ever Friday in the U.S. Open, not so much with his attire as a golf game so wildly entertaining that he made only four pars in his 2-under 68 that gave him a share of the 36-hole record and a one-shot lead going into the weekend.

Los Angeles Country Club tried to fight back after a record opening day of low scores, and help arrived in the form of a blazing sun and just enough wind to keep the toughest test in golf from turning into a festival of birdies.

Fowler still did his part, making birdies on half of the holes he has played over two rounds. What mattered was leading a major at the halfway point for the first time, and growing confidence that his three-year slump is well behind him.

He was at 10-under 130, tying the U.S. Open record set by Martin Kaymer in 2014 at Pinehurst No. 2. Fowler led by one shot over Wyndham Clark (67), with Rory McIlroy (67) and Xander Schauffele (70) two shots behind.

“Yes, I’m in the lead, but we’re only halfway there,” Fowler said. “Being in the lead is nice, but it really means nothing right now. I’m looking forward to continuing to challenge myself and go out there and try and execute the best I can.”

fowler birdies the first to keep the one shot lead over clark. schauffele is going to shoot himself out of the championship in the first few holes if he doesn't get it together.
