You are doing yourself a disservice not to at least talk to him directly and make him say no. There is absolutely zero reason to rush the hire if there is a potential game changing candidate that will listen to Coyle’s pitch (and might even be potentially intrigued)
That sure changed quick, Sid. You had him as "The guy" a few days ago and now you just want to hear him say no?
He was never an option.
Oh he’s still an option...his agent hasn’t said no yet, but wants to not talk about it until after Arkansas season is complete. Arkansas alumns are mobilizing and talking 4+M a year which Coyle can’t do
He also isn't leaving his current job for what at best is a side grade and I would say that's being generous.
If Indiana comes calling then ya. The only thing Minnesota fans are holding on to is that his old man coached here 100 years ago.

So how would he do the buyout again? There is zero steam from anyone else in the world of college hoops on Musselman to Minnesota at this point. I have no idea what you do for a living but you're it for the steam at this point. Onward Sid!

I’m a successful consultant for some of the biggest and best companies in the world. I tell you about systems architecture, not the other way around.

I hope this is it for Luka Garza in a Iowa uniform.
Embarrassing defense
People must have really gotten sick of the B10 hype all year.
They are getting ripped by everyone and people love seeing it.
People asked how did the Gophers win some of the games they did? Because the 10 was overrated severely.
Style of play something different? I saw Loyola go into a 1-2-2 zone yesterday and Illinois looked lost. Weird deal.

Funny how nobody's "sources" here mentioned that name.
It's not that nobody mentioned it. His name was brought up and there were rumors that Coyle had someone most were not talking about. This is a shocker though. Craig Smith REALLY wanted this job badly.

People are livid. Gopher hole is blowing up.
I'm guessing no one wanted this job. He has absolutely no resume for a hire like this.
Lil Ritchies old assistant. Very underwhelming.
It's a big jump but he was more important on the staff than Pitino when he was here.

Can he coach though? This seems like a very cheap move.
We'll see! I would love to see Tim Miles brought in as his associate head coach now...

I'm sure this had to primarily do to recruiting and establishing his relationship with local AAU coaches. Ben Johnson better have multiple experience assistant coaches. He has zero. I'm sure at some point Ben Johnson will be a great head coach but this feels like 5-10 years too early.
Wow what a give up hire...we just came from on the job training and going to do it again. I like Ben but we didn’t keep local guys home with him as assistant why will
It change now

This is legitimately an embarrassing hire. I’m out on interest. This was about money.
You will be missed, Kevin!

Probably not lol. But this is uninspired. If people are pumped more power to them. He’s a U guy and a wonderful person I’m sure but this isn’t the Missouri Valley conference where you take chances with assistants. Go out and get a proven head coach. I’m not some unreasonable goon who said Musselman or bust. I liked Medved and Craig Smith. This is just....uhhh uninspiring. Hope I’m wrong! Love gopher sports!

I agree. People from Utah are thanking us for not going Smith.
My problem with it is if he can coach or not. Great if he’s a good recruiter but you need to be able to coach them.
Pitino was absolutely terrible at the X’s and O’s and the Michigan’s, Ohio St, Indiana’s, Mich sts etc are almost always going to get better talent than Minnesota. You need a good system and coaching. Reasons why Wisconsin is good year after year. They don’t usually have the best talent but make the most out of them.
I’m not saying Ben can’t coach but we have no clue if he can and I don’t think you can take that risk right now especially after taking this same kind of risk with Pitino. This hire also does nothing imo for fan interest but winning will take care of that.

I’m probably overreacting to the hire. But the whole “oh he’ll recruit and keep guys in state!” is almost always bullshit. I don’t know Sergeant Rubetube, I hope I’m wrong. I love gopher sports and actually do go to games. Basketball and hockey. Not so much football. I’ll take a wait and see approach. And I won’t shit on Ben Johnson going forward for now because it’s not fair to him.
