The Strengths and Weaknesses Game [QB]

Post by salamander »

I won't say who these players are (please don't look them up). Rank which QB prospect you'd want, based solely off what this random NFL Draft site says about each player. These are largely considered the top 6 QB's in this draft.

I'll post who they are in a couple days.

Prospect 1:
Strengths:

-Put up an utterley ridiculous 2023 season
-Exceptional athletic ability. Displays natural speed and gains significant yardage as a runner with his large frame.
-Exhibits high proficiency in pocket maneuvering, evading pressure effortlessly, and leveraging vision to find escape lanes for ground gains.
-Impressive arm strength allowing him to target all three levels of the field with ease. Demonstrates quick release, especially on short and intermediate throws.
-Expertise in throwing on the run, maintaining focus on downfield targets, and delivering accurate throws even across his body.
-Sound decision-making ability, distinguishing between moments to be aggressive and those to opt for check-downs. Experienced in full-field and half-field reads.
-Consistent drops, smooth footwork, and a compact throwing motion. Capable of stepping into pressure for accurate throws during collapsing plays.
-Outstanding running ability, particularly on QB-run-designed plays. Controls game tempo with QB power, counter, and draw plays. Elusive in the open field.
-Brings leadership qualities as a seasoned starter, presenting no athletic limitations and fitting the dual-threat QB profile perfectly, using his running prowess to set up passing opportunities.
Weaknesses:
-Has struggled to consistently operate from the pocket, particularly with throws across all field levels. Displays discomfort and inconsistency when required to make extended progressions.
Inconsistent throwing motion which hampers accuracy, timing, and power. Lacks proper lower body engagement, resulting in reduced throw power and accuracy, especially on sideline passes.
Faces issues connecting his throwing motion with his legs, leading to inconsistent ball placement and capped arm strength.

Prospect 2:
Strengths:

-Arm talent is evident with the way he can zip the ball through tight spaces, reminiscent of his clutch throws during the [opposing college's] game.
-Despite the run-heavy offense, he has consistently shown the ability to take over games when needed.
-His agility in the pocket was evident during the [specific game], using his feet to buy time and keeping his eyes downfield.
-His deep ball accuracy is on display with several of his touchdown passes, particularly against [opposing college's] where he highlighted his ability to drop balls into tight coverage.
-Has shown a strong pocket presence in high-pressure situations, notably when he outplayed [well known QB].
-His clutch performances extend beyond just big games; his natural leadership and intangibles were crucial in guiding [ his team to team's W/L record].
-Excelled in play-action sequences throughout the season, pulling defenders out of position with his fakes.
-While maintaining a consistent release point, his game tapes against top-tier defenses show his impeccable throwing mechanics and decision-making under duress.
-Though there's room for improvement in his middle-field reads, his performance against top college defenses suggests strong potential for growth in this area with more coaching.
-His frame, combined with his stellar on-field performance, signals great potential for development at the next level, backed by glowing reviews from NFL scouts.
Weaknesses:
-While he flashes a strong arm, he battles inconsistencies with ball placement, often forcing his pass-catchers to adjust mid-route, inhibiting YAC potential.
-When airing it out, he struggles with touch and loft, rather than just relying on his arm strength. This sometimes gives DBs (defensive backs) a window to make a play on the ball.
-On tape, he's shown a glaring deficiency in throws to the boundary on the right side, hinting at a potential mechanical flaw in his release or footwork.
-His dropbacks sometimes lack the crispness and rhythm, causing him to telegraph throws, especially on out routes, giving corners a jump on the ball.
-Physique-wise, he sports a wiry frame that might raise eyebrows about his ability to take NFL-caliber hits, especially between the tackles or on scrambles.
-His pocket presence needs refinement; while he’s got the wheels to extend plays, he tends to bail from clean pockets rather than stepping up and navigating the pocket with poise.
-His football IQ, while promising, showcases a rawness in reading complex defensive schemes and disguises, a red flag when projecting against NFL defenses.
-Ball velocity is a strength, but he often lasers passes when a softer touch is needed, particularly against layered zone coverages or when dropping it in the bucket over linebackers and in front of safeties.
-As he heads to the pro level, diversifying his route tree and demonstrating a consistent ability to progress through reads will be paramount.
-His pre-snap diagnostics show room for growth; recognizing blitz packages, adjusting protections, and hot-routing will be crucial in the faster-paced, more intricate NFL defensive schemes.

Prospect 3:
Strengths:

-Exhibits marked improvement in his pocket presence and processing speed.
-He demonstrates pro-level aptitude in key QB fundamentals: thrives under empty sets, executes with precision during two-minute drills, and showcases mobility outside the pocket.
-He has an innate ability to extend plays under duress, making off-schedule plays when things break down.
-His pocket mobility is top-tier, consistently evading the pass rush while keeping his eyes downfield, making him a threat in RPO (run-pass option) situations.
-He manipulates defenses with his eyes, effectively holding safeties and linebackers to create passing lanes. Delivers the ball with zip, especially when threading the needle against tight coverage.
-With a prototypical build he combines size with arm talent, positioning himself as an enticing draft prospect.
-While he might not have the biggest cannon in the class, his arm strength is more than adequate. Delivers with velocity, even when throwing off-platform.
-His release is compact and quick, allowing him to get the ball out with timing and rhythm, especially in short to intermediate throws.
-Shows versatility in his delivery, altering arm angles to throw around defenders while maintaining velocity and accuracy.
-His footwork and agility in the pocket enable him to sidestep pressure, reset, and deliver strikes downfield.
-When the pocket breaks down, he remains balanced, demonstrating the ability to change direction swiftly and roll out to create opportunities.
-Open-field awareness is a strength; he can capitalize on scrambling lanes while consistently keeping a downfield passing mentality.
-As a ball-carrier, he displays a good blend of agility and burst, making defenders miss in space. His dual-threat capability demands defensive game-planning.
-His combination of athleticism and arm talent provides a solid foundation for NFL offenses to craft schemes around his strengths.
Weaknesses:
-While he has shown growth, inconsistencies still exist. His footwork can become jittery under pressure, resulting in erratic throws not attributed to arm talent limitations.
-His reliance on sideline cues before snaps raises questions about his ability to helm a complex NFL offense independently.
-Has shown marked improvement, but teams may be cautious about determining which facets of his game can be successfully transitioned to the NFL.
-He needs to refine his game processing. He can telegraph primary reads, and his hesitancy during receiver breaks can lead to missed opportunities. -This also extends to deep routes, where despite having the arm strength, he often hesitates.
-Improvisation under pressure introduces risk. His tendency to force plays or make impulsive throws increases the chance for turnovers. His in-pocket presence, especially in collapsing situations, can be erratic, leading to rushed decisions.
-His perception of oncoming pressure is inconsistent, impacting pocket discipline. A more reliable sense of incoming threats is crucial for his professional growth.

Prospect 4:
Strengths:

-Excellent athletic ability with quickness and speed, making him a dual-threat as a scrambler and designed runner.
-Boasts very strong arm strength, delivering throws with high velocity outside the numbers and deep downfield.
-Demonstrates great skill in throwing off-platform and under pressure, maintaining accuracy even in a cluttered pocket.
-Shows superb accuracy across all three levels of the field, coupled with occasional flashes of exceptional touch.
-Operates effectively within structure, maintaining timeliness and awareness of checkdown options.
-Prototypical, tall QB build combined with exceptional mobility and quantifiable elite arm talent.
-Effortlessly generates high velocity on throws with a crisp release, effectively pushing the ball outside the numbers.
-Exhibits remarkable 360-degree arm flexibility and fluidity, enhancing his ability to make off-platform throws.
-In [year] [college name] he had one of the worst offensive lines in college football, but he still managed to put up huge numbers despite being under constant pressure
-Impressive sporting bloodlines
-Tall athlete with the speed and foot quickness to pick up yards on the ground. Ran a lot of designed quarterback runs and showed the athleticism to be considered a legitimate dual-threat option.
Weaknesses:
-Is an excellent scrambler however he often takes too long to decide who to throw to putting huge pressure on the offensive line
-He’s often slow in his progressions and had trouble with some relatively simple coverage rotations, and when his first read isn't open he struggles to get to the next guy
-Needs to refine his base mechanics through passes, avoiding a narrowed rotation that can impact throw efficiency.
-Footwork sometimes shows inconsistency, particularly in pocket navigation, leading to a loss of stability and accuracy.
-Prone to making risky decisions under pressure, occasionally resulting in turnovers or forced throws in challenging situations.

Prospect 5:
Strengths:

-Has elite overall arm talent and make pretty much any throw even when off balance
-Put up ridiculous numbers in [specific year].
-Has an almost unique ability to pull off spectacular plays and saves his best for when the chips are down
-His play doesn't drop off when under pressure - made an array of quality passes while trying to avoid a heavy pass rush
-His play is consistently top-notch despite being on a team with serious OL problems and only limited blocking help from backs
-He’s a huge threat with his legs - his play-fakes are outstanding, and has the ability to manipulate safeties with his eyes.
-He’s a pure athlete, loose-limbed and flexible. Has the speed to pick up yardage in scramble situations.
-Elite accuracy overall, including excellent accuracy on short timing routes to backs and receivers, placing the ball slightly in front to lead receivers to potential yardage after the catch.
-Natural leader who will put the game on his back - very mature player
-Moves effectively and can throw on the run. He’s at his best on bootlegs, showing zip and accuracy on those throws.
Weaknesses:
-Doesn't have the prototypical size for the position - may be an injury risk going forward especially considering his play style
-Plays in a simplistic offense mainly consisting of one-read concepts. How he would perform in a traditional pro offense is uncertain
-Has played exclusively in the shotgun - at the moment he would be a work in progress as a dropback passer
-His mechanics are hit-or-miss and his footwork needs cleaning up - although most of these issues are hidden by his arm talent
-Tends to hold the ball loosely and away from his body, putting him at risk for strip sacks.

Prospect 6:
Strengths:

-Has a big strong arm, is able to effortlessly throw a deep out without any effort. [specific game] proved he was more than capable of making any NFL pass with ease
-Exhibits elite field generalship; excels in dissecting defensive alignments pre-snap, ensuring high-percentage throws post-snap.
-Shows touch on deep balls and intermediate routes, demonstrating an ability to drop dimes in tight coverage.
-Shows continued progression in arm mechanics, adept at layering throws over linebackers and under safeties with precision.
-Routinely identifies mismatches and exploits secondary weaknesses with rapid progression reads.
-Instills confidence in his receiving corps, delivering throws that allow for yards-after-catch opportunities and highlight-reel grabs.
-Displays pocket mobility with subtle slide and step-up maneuvers, maintaining downfield focus under duress.
-Able to quickly bounce back from setbacks - has a short memory - just what you need in a signal caller
-Physical toolkit meshes well with pro-style offenses; has the build and athleticism to extend plays and absorb contact at the next level.
Weaknesses:
-His game could benefit from further refinement, particularly in achieving consistency and precision in pocket drop timing, impacting his ball placement.
-Experiences occasional accuracy lapses across various field zones, especially on finesse throws, potentially linked to his unorthodox and elongated throwing motion.
-[specific aspect of his game that would give who this is away] may pose a challenge for some NFL teams that would need to adjust their offensive scheme to suit his playing style.
-May limit perceived upside
-While capable of quality throws, his arm mechanics sometimes slow his release, offering defenders a split-second advantage in the quicker pro game.

It's been 32 years since one of MN's four major sports teams has been to the Championship/Superbowl.
Every single year is failure until we win one. 4 teams, 32 years. That's roughly 128 consecutive failed seasons.

Can we have their age? So many of these positive traits can be the result of a kid being 24 playing against 19 year olds.
