Fishing Report

On the south end... There is a chill in the air. Flocks of geese are starting to fly. Leaves are just hinting of a change and fall is on its way. As Mother Nature transitions, fishing continues to be good.
Two techniques continue catching the majority of the walleyes, drifting spinners with crawlers and trolling crankbaits.
Many of the charters continue to run to the north end of the lake as there have been good numbers of eaters. Drifting spinners with a gold blade with some red on it along with a two hook harness and a crawler continues to catch good. Pink, gold, gold/red, and gold/orange continue to be good blade colors.
Try to maintain a 45 degree angle with your weight when pulling spinners. Keep your weight just off of the bottom, touching once in a while just to make sure you are near the bottom. 1.25 mph is a desired speed for snelled spinners.
Trolling crankbaits over deep mud or around the mud / rock transition on the deep edges of rock piles continues to produce larger fish along with some eaters. Trophy walleyes are being caught using both methods.
On the Rainy River... Another very nice week of walleye fishing on the river and it should only get better. Four Mile Bay has some fish as do shoreline breaks, bars and other pieces of structure throughout the river. Trolling spinners and trolling crankbaits has been effective.
Some big pike are being caught casting shorelines and back bays.
The river is all about a mixed bag. Walleyes, saugers, smallmouth bass, pike, big crappies and lake sturgeon are all being caught.
Up at the NW Angle... An incredible week of fishing up at the Angle. Walleye anglers are reporting phenomenal fishing with good numbers of fish.
Walleye anglers, check out areas of structure until you find fish. Jigging is very popular amongst the island structure and when fishing the "spot on a spot". When you are on a flat area, fishing a shoreline or up and down sunken islands, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits are effective.
Nice multi species action for those casting shorelines.
Muskie anglers are catching nicely. With colder weather around the corner, many muskie anglers look forward to trolling shorelines and areas of structure around islands.

On the south end... As we roll into September, nice coolers of walleyes are common with guides and charters with some big trophies being caught as well. Catching these predators isn't always a slam dunk as first you have to find them and then get them to eat.
The two techniques with the continued warm weather catching the majority of the walleyes are drifting spinners with crawlers and trolling crankbaits.
Many of the charters continue to run to the north end of the lake for good numbers of eaters. Drifting spinners (or slowly trolling if no wind) with a gold and red or a pink blade along with a two hook harness with a crawler continues to catch numbers of fish.
Tip with crawler harnesses, hook for front hook in the dark part of the crawler, straighten the crawler out and hook the second hook. Leave about 2-3 inches of crawler off of the back hook and pinch off the rest.
If you are looking at a mix of eaters with the chance of larger walleyes, the basin is holding larger fish. Both the mud and rock reefs have fish. Electronics are a big help in knowing where to fish. There is a lot of water.
Trolling crankbaits is producing good numbers of fish, including big fish. This technique is effective on all parts of the lake and will continue into the fall months.
Jigging will pick up and be a desired bait for walleyes as the waters cool.
On the Rainy River... As fall temps start to appear and the days continue to get shorter, Mother Nature will drive some transition activity on the river. This means shiners running and more fish entering the river.
As past reports have noted, there are some fish in the river already and it should only get better. Typically, mid September is when we start hearing about increased activity.
Walleyes are being caught in Four Mile Bay, along various shoreline breaks, bars and other pieces of structure up and down the river. Trolling spinners and trolling crankbaits has been effective covering water and triggering fish.
Pike and smallmouth bass are being caught casting shorelines and back bays. Crappies are showing up along docks and just off of shoreline breaks.
Sturgeon season is open and the "dinosaur" activity will pick up as waters cool. For those targeting these huge fish, there are fish being caught. A sturgeon rig loaded with crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners is the ticket.
Up at the NW Angle... Fishing on both sides of the border continues strong. Walleyes are the most sought after, but if you have fished the islands area, you know muskies, smallies, pike, sauger, crappies and perch are in the mix.
Walleye anglers, some nice fish being caught on flats adjacent to structure. There are also walleyes on various areas of structure. Not every walleye is focusing on the same forage in the lake. Flats often have walleyes spread out, thus covering water with cranks or spinners is effective.
Jigging areas of structure is catching fish. Many guides jig all year. When fishing Ontario waters, live and dead bait cannot be transported across the border from the U.S., hence plastics are being used. Another option is to purchase live bait in Canada, your favorite resort can help you with how and where.
Muskie anglers are catching fish with some nice fish over 50 inches this week.

On the south end... Nice walleyes being caught this week on Lake of the Woods. A nice mix of eaters (under 19.5 inches), slot fish (19.5 - 28 inches which must be released) and trophy walleyes (over 28 inches). Although cooler temps and fall is upon us, the best bite so far is still pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits. Jigging will kick in very soon!
There are walleyes being caught at many locations around the lake. One area that continues to put out good numbers of eaters is Little Traverse Bay which is located on the north end of the lake.
Various spots along the south shore from Pine Island, Zippel Bay to Long Point in 15 - 30 feet of water are starting to heat up as some walleyes are gravitating to their traditional fall areas. The key is to locate fish using electronics.
Reefs in the SW corner of the lake typically hold fish throughout the year and are also putting out some walleyes.
Drift or troll spinners at 1.0 - 1.25 mph with a gold and red, a glow red or a pink blade with a two hook harness with a crawler. This technique continues to produce.
Trolling crankbaits continues to produce good numbers of fish, including big fish. This technique will continue to produce nice walleyes into the fall months.
Jigging will pick up any time with the shorter days and cooler temps.
Saugers, big pike, jumbo perch and a few crappies in the mix of walleyes throughout a day of fishing.
On the Rainy River... A great week of fishing on the Rainy River. There continues to be good reports for walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass, crappies, sturgeon, suckers and bullheads. A variety of fish is common on the Rainy River.
Walleyes are being caught in Four Mile Bay, along various shoreline breaks, bars and other pieces of structure up and down the river. Trolling spinners and trolling crankbaits has been effective covering water and triggering fish. Jigging will start to pick up soon.
Emerald shiners run in the fall up the river. Not a lot of reports yet but typically that will change in the very near future.
Pike and smallmouth bass are being caught casting shorelines, bays and areas with rock or structure.
For those targeting sturgeon, some decent activity this week. The sturgeon bite tends to be very active during the fall months. The keep or catch and release season is open throughout the fall if you like huge fish or simply want to mix up the walleye fishing a bit.
Up at the NW Angle... Nice fish are being caught on both sides of the border. Most anglers are targeting walleyes, but there is a plethora of species to be had amongst the islands. Fall is an incredible time to fish the Angle.
Walleye anglers are finding fish in typical walleye haunts. Points, reefs, flats and neck down areas with current. Good reports are coming from anglers using jigs, spinners and crankbaits.
September and October are months anglers like to catch the huge crappies that live amongst the islands. Deeper areas off of points are good bets. Electronics are helpful in locating these fish. Crappies can reach up to 17 inches in these parts, with most in that 12 - 15 inch range.
Muskie activity is definitely picking up. Many reports of fish over 50 inches this week caught and released. Many other fish in that 40 - 50 inch range caught as well.

On the south end... Some great fall walleye fishing this past week on Lake of the Woods. September is a transition time, both for walleyes, bait, and what techniques they prefer.
Walleyes are being caught at many locations around the lake. The north end continues to be producing a good number of eater walleyes with the mixed in trophy. This part of the lake has been consistent all summer and now into the fall.
The south end of the lake is kicking out some nice limits as well, just have to find the fish. Electronics help of course, but so does covering water.
The two techniques to cover water are spinners / crawlers and crankbaits. Both are still producing fish. The third common technique that is starting to kick in more and more every week as the water cools is jigging with a frozen emerald shiner. Once you find the fish, this can be super effective.
Most fish are being caught in 18 - 32 feet, depending upon where you are fishing. There can be a morning / evening bite along the shoreline areas which is worth exploring. The shallower water can also light up during the day if bait is present.
Areas throughout the lake with rock hold nice numbers of smallmouth bass. The south shore between Long Point and Morris Point has many scattered areas with rock as does the areas around Knight, Bridges and Garden Islands.
Saugers, big pike, jumbo perch and a few crappies in the mix of walleyes throughout a day of fishing.
On the Rainy River... Some good fishing in the Rainy River right now. Walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass, crappies, sturgeon, suckers and bullheads are all in the mix, depending upon what technique(s) you are using.
Walleyes continue to be caught in Four Mile Bay, along various shoreline breaks, bars and other pieces of structure up and down the river. Trolling spinners and trolling crankbaits continues to be effective. Many anglers are jigging key areas and success. It will get even better as the waters continue to cool.

Walleyes are hanging out on points, reefs, flats and neck down areas with current. Good reports are coming from anglers using jigs, spinners and crankbaits. Some anglers swear by a jig and plastic or minnow. Others believe moving around with a spinner or crankbait is most productive. All three methods are catching fish.
Crappies are being found in 20 - 30 feet off of points and around brush piles. Electronics helps to find the schools.
Casting shorelines this time of year will put a plethora of species in the boat and is very enjoyable. Crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits, inline spinners and bladed jigs are all good lures to work shorelines.
Muskies have been active. Great reports as most muskie anglers fish just over the border from the Angle. With 14,552 islands, lots of spots, lots of fish. .

On the south end... Fall walleye fishing is in full swing on Lake of the Woods. Some excellent reports this week with an increase of fish along the south shore and an increase in anglers catching them via jigging, however spinners and crankbaits are still working well.
Anchored up or spot locked and jigging over the side of the boat is an effective fall method. Using gold, pink, glow, orange and chartreuse colored jigs tipped with a frozen emerald shiner is hard to beat.
Spinners with crawlers or minnows and trolling crankbaits are still producing fish and is an effective way to put your baits in front of many fish, some of which will typically react.
With literally millions of walleyes in Lake of the Woods, not every walleye is focusing on the same forage in the same area. Walleyes are being caught at many locations around the lake, including deep mud, reefs, shorelines and transition areas (rock to mud, mud to sand).
Most fish are being caught in 18 - 32 feet, depending upon where you are fishing. Don't forget about the morning / evening bite along the shoreline areas.
Big pike, jumbo perch, a few crappies and an occasional sturgeon in the mix of walleyes and saugers throughout a day of fishing.
On the Rainy River... Some shiners have started to run up the Rainy River. There have been good fishing reports with fish being caught, but it isn't the heavy fall run yet. The walleye fishing isn't a slamfest yet, but there are definitely some nice fish to be had.
Jigging is becoming more effective with water temps in the low 60's. This technique will only get better as the fall continues. Trolling spinners and trolling crankbaits continues to be effective as well.
Walleyes continue to be caught in Four Mile Bay, along various shoreline breaks, bars and other pieces of structure up and down the river.
Pike and smallmouth bass are hanging out on shorelines, in bays and areas with rock. Some nice crappies being caught around docks and off of breaks.
Fall sturgeon fishing is normally very good in the fall and is overshadowed by the walleye run! The sturgeon season is open through the winter into the spring.
Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the Angle continues good. Limits of walleyes are being caught on both sides of the border.
Walleyes are hanging out on points, reefs, flats and neck down areas with current. They are being caught jigging, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits. All three methods are catching fish.
As a rule of thumb, jig over structure, pull spinners or cranks to cover water along a shoreline, on a flat or to find fish.
Crappies are in 20 - 30 feet off of points and around brush piles. Electronics help to find, and stay on the schools of fish.
Muskies continue to be active. Big pike are in abundance and snappin'. Smallmouth bass are active with cooling water temps.

On the south end... Good numbers of walleyes are being caught, but you have to find them! Some reports are just okay, scratching out a limit. Others are putting good numbers in the boat.
It's good fishing right now. Fall is a season of transition. Once you find them, things normally work out. Shiners are running up the river and into some bays. Walleyes are starting to show up in their traditional fall spots, in some cases.
With the unseasonably warm weather, spinners and crankbaits are still working well. Anglers choosing to jig are reporting good action as well.
Trolling lead core line with crankbaits between Zippel Bay and Morris Point in 28' has been productive as of late. When these fish get more congregated, jigging will be a fun way to catch them.
A good number of charters are still running north. Pulling spinners and jigging have both produced.
A mixed bag for most anglers. Some big crappies are in the mix this year, often over 14 inches. Pike, smallmouth bass and perch are active as well.
On the Rainy River... Shiners continue to run in the Rainy River. Millions of these shiny silver fish are on the move and showing up under lights at the end of resort docks.
Fishing reports on the river are mixed, some anglers super happy with nice fish, others reporting catching a lot of small fish. The heavy run hasn't happened yet and fish are moving through chasing shiners. The anticipation is that fishing will only get better as October plays out, it normally does.
Two methods are catching most of the walleyes. Trolling crankbaits to cover water and jigging when fish are more concentrated or swimming through.
Walleyes continue to be caught in Four Mile Bay, around Baudette, the airport and of course, other goto spots along the way and upstream as well. So many spots to fish and the fish are usually moving.
Some good sturgeon being caught this week. Many were caught from unsuspecting walleye anglers. As the saying goes, "Ya never know what you will catch on Lake of the Woods and Rainy River."
Smallmouth bass have also been active. The river boasts a very nice population of bass that don't receive much attention.
Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the Angle is strong right now. Many anglers slide over the border while others prefer to fish MN waters. Both are good.
A reminder, anglers and boaters are allowed to boat from the U.S. into Canada waters without clearing customs as long as they don't touch land, a dock, anchor, moor or exchange goods or services. Also, no bait allowed from the U.S. into Canada. Live, dead, frozen, etc all cannot be transported across. Most using plastics. Another option is to purchase bait once across into Canada.
This time of year, when you find them, it normally goes well. A few guides reporting 100+ fish days for walleyes.
Walleyes are hanging out on points, reefs, flats and neck down areas with current in 17 - 22 feet. They are being caught jigging primarily, but those trolling spinners or crankbaits are doing well too.
Fall is known as a great season for pike, crappies and muskies. The tradition is holding true with good fish being caught.

On the south end... A very strong bite along the south shore of Lake of the Woods. Nice numbers of walleyes and saugers are targeting big schools of emerald shiners in the lake. The target depth is 26 feet of water, give or take, with nice limits being caught from Pine Island, Morris Point, Zippel Bay and Long Point.
Most anglers are jigging with an emerald shiner, rainbow or fathead. Jig colors of gold, pink, orange, glow white and red or a combo of those colors have been consistent.
Some anglers are still trolling lead core and catching walleyes and saugers, but most anglers are jigging with great success.
On the Rainy River... Shiners continue to run in the Rainy River, and to nobody's surprise, walleye fishing continues to get better and better. Most fish so far have been nice eater fish with small fish mixed in. Those targeting big walleyes are hoping the deer hunting tradition of putting out big fish continues.
Two methods are catching most of the walleyes. Jigging with emerald shiners and trolling crankbaits with lead core line or 3 way rigs are both catching walleyes. Jigging produced nice eater walleyes this week.
Target depths range from 8 - 24 feet of water depending upon what part of the river you are fishing.
As is the norm on Lake of the Woods, a mixed bag with pike, jumbo perch, sturgeon, crappies and smallmouth bass in the mix as well.
Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing is strong on both sides of the border up at the Angle.
Points, reefs, flats and neck down areas with current in 17 - 22 feet continue to hold good numbers of walleyes and anglers are reporting big numbers of fish. Most anglers are catching fish jigging primarily.
Pike, smallmouth bass, jumbo perch, crappies and muskies have been active as well.

On the south end... A very strong bite continues, the fish are there, but a late October snowfall of about 6 inches has halted most fishing.
Good numbers of walleyes and saugers continue targeting big schools of emerald shiners in the lake. 24- 26 feet of water, give or take, has been producing nice limits from Pine Island, Morris Point, Zippel Bay and Long Point.
Jigging with emerald shiners, rainbows or fatheads working well. Emerald shiners are preferred by many as a walleye natural forage. Gold, pink, orange, glow white and red or a combo has been good colors.

On the Rainy River... Shiners continue to run in the Rainy River in good numbers. Nice walleyes being caught for thise willing to brave the weather.
Jigging with emerald shiners has also been catching the majority of fish in the river.
Target depths range from 8 - 24 feet of water depending upon what part of the river you are fishing.
The river is still open and free of ice.
Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing finished strong on both sides of the border up at the Angle.
Some harbors and far back bays are making ice and open water fishing is coming to a halt.

On the south end... Very few anglers out this past week on the big lake. A combination of a blanket of snow combined with the deer hunting tradition has most anglers waiting for ice.
Last report, good numbers of walleyes and saugers were in various spots across the south shore chasing schools of shiners. The ideal depth was 22 - 26 feet of water. Typically, these fish will hold till early ice conditions allow anglers access. Early ice fishing could be good.
Back bays are iced up. The lake and larger bays are still wide open.
The 10 day forecast shows above freezing temps, which is normal this time of year. Mother Nature determines, but traditionally, day houses start going out around December 10th, give or take. Are you ready?
Resorts and outfitters are working hard making sure fish houses, light ice rigs, bombers, plows, augers, stakes for ice roads / trails, signs and other necessary equipment are ready to roll when it's time. We encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety only when they give the green light, which will be a while.
On the Rainy River... Shiners continue to run in the Rainy River in good numbers. Some nice walleyes being caught for the few anglers willing to brave the weather.
Jigging with emerald shiners has also been catching the majority of fish in the river. Target depths range from 8 - 24 feet of water.
Anglers who are targeting sturgeon are having good action as the fish are active.
The river is still open and free of ice.
Up at the NW Angle... Much like the south end of the lake, fishing for most is pretty much wrapped up. Back bays and harbors have a skim of ice and most boats are pulled.
Fall fishing was strong and good numbers of walleyes have resorts and anglers optimistic for the winter season.

On the south end... Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods. With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out. Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.
Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening. Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.
Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered. There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc. This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.
Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on. Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed.
Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore. When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety.
On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is ice covered. Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing. As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.
Up at the NW Angle... The Angle is ice covered (as a whole). Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails. The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely.
There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

"Best Start to Ice Fishing Since 2005!" (In the words of one resort owner)

Ice fishing has begun for many resorts and outfitters on Lake of the Woods. Everyone is optimistic as the walleye and sauger bite has been excellent. And the fish are not just in one area, they are being caught across miles of shoreline. As one resort owner put it, and I quote, “Best start since 2005!"

Man killed when commercial transport vehicle crashes through Lake of the Woods ice
Several passengers and the driver escaped from the "bomber." It's the season's second known ice-related fatality in Minnesota.

A commercial transport vehicle commonly known as a "bomber" crashed through the ice on Lake of the Woods in the Northwest Angle on Thursday morning, killing one of the passengers.

It is believed to be Minnesota's second ice fishing fatality of the season.

The accident near Flag Island up north was reported shortly after 8 a.m. The body of a male passenger was recovered about seven hours later in about 10 feet of water by a Cass County dive team, according to a statement from the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff's Office. The statement provided no other details, saying the incident was under investigation and that family members of the deceased were still being notified.

Paul Colson, owner of Jake's Northwest Angle Resort, said a neighboring resort was operating the Bombardier snow bus when it broke through the ice about 900 yards south of Flag Island. Several passengers, perhaps five or six, escaped from the water with the help of the driver, Colson said.

The last fatal accident on Lake of the Woods involving a commercial transport vehicle during an ice fishing run was 1996, Colson said.

He said the rear end of the bomber crashed through the ice Thursday and bottomed out on the lake's floor. The front end remained elevated on broken ice. Colson said he checked the depth of the ice with his chain saw while at the scene, measuring 12 inches of ice.

"I was expecting to find thin ice but I found a foot of ice all around the machine,'' Colson said. "You'd be hard-pressed to find better ice anywhere in Minnesota right now.''

Colson said his resort stayed out of the ice fishing business this season but not because of ice conditions or weather. He said local ice fishing outfitters, including himself, consider 12 inches enough to support a bomber carrying passengers.

Bombers, equipped with caterpillar tracks, are used on the American side of the lake to haul customers to and from fish houses away from shore.

"I would have put one of my machines on the same ice,'' Colson said.

On Friday, law enforcement identified the man killed when a commercial transport vehicle broke through the ice in the Northwest Angle near Flag Island on Lake of the Woods.

John F. Frey, 78, of Prairie du Sac, Wis., drowned when a tracked vehicle, known commonly as a Bombardier or "bomber," carrying him, six other passengers, and a driver went through the ice about 8 a.m. Thursday.

The bomber was en route to a fishing location when it crashed through about 12 inches of ice and began to sink in about 10 feet of water. The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Friday that the driver, along with a nearby party, began getting passengers out of the vehicle "until the cold water prohibited their continued efforts."

Seven of the eight people onboard were able to escape. A Cass County dive team recovered Frey's body from the vehicle Thursday afternoon.

Bombers are used to haul customers to and from fish houses away from shore.

An investigation of the accident is continuing, the Sheriff's Office said.

Bombers are supposed to have flotation bags or other means to stay a float when breaking through ice. Last fatality was ‘96. If I remember right there was a few multi casualty bomber sinking back then.

On the south end... Ice fishing continues to be good for most anglers fishing through resorts and outfitters on Lake of the Woods. The bite has slowed down a bit from its hot start, but nice fish are still coming in.
With the unseasonably warm temperatures so far this winter, ice conditions are not where they would normally be the first week of January. Consequently, more than ever, it is very important to work through a resort or outfitter. There are still areas of ice that are not ready, some cracks that are moving and generally areas to stay away from.
Pay close attention to the guidelines and weight limits of each individual ice road. Most resorts offer round trip heated shuttle service to their heated fish houses that are set up and ready to fish.
Some resorts are allowing travel using your own ice transportation (snowmobile, ATV, side by side) with collapsible fish houses on their staked trails. Again, it is very important to adhere to weight restrictions, stay on the marked trails and do not venture off course. Do not travel past the end of the trail as there is still some very sketchy ice in areas.
Most ice fishing on the south end of the lake is in 17 - 23 feet of water. Jig with one line and use a deadstick in the second hole, basically a live minnow 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom. Some days, the walleyes and saugers want it moving (jigging line). Other days, the walleyes and saugers prefer the deadstick (bobber line) works best.
Jigging spoons with gold and bright colors tipped with a piece of minnow head or tail is the goto for the jigging rod. On the deadstick, an ice fishing jig or plain hook with an emerald shiner / minnow is the ticket.
On the Rainy River... A couple of local resorts offer ice fishing on the river, marking and closely monitoring ice conditions on their trails. Walleyes, saugers and sturgeon are the targeted species.
Ice conditions vary greatly. Again, work through a resort for safety and do not venture out on your own.
Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing is going well for resorts up at the NW Angle. Good reports of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout and pike in the mix.
The one - two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.
Ice fishing electronics are very helpful in not only detecting fish, but also seeing how they are reacting to your offerings and presentation. If they are not reacting positively, change something.

On the south end... Colder temps and thickening ice has allowed resorts and outfitters to access new areas and deeper water. Consequently, some excellent reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.
It continues to be very important to work through a resort or outfitter. There are still areas of ice that are not ready, some cracks to be avoided and generally areas to stay away from. The bottom line, ice conditions vary.
Most ice fishing on the south end of the lake is in 17 - 28 feet of water. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second on a plain hook or an ice fishing jig has been effective.
On the jigging line, try something aggressive such as a rippin rap with rattles and vibration. Gold, blue / chrome and pink uv firetiger are good colors.
The most common jigging lure is a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow or piece of minnow. Colors working well in the stained waters of LOW. Gold, gold / glow red, gold / pink, chartreuse, glow white or a combo of colors.
On the deadstick, hook a live minnow just under the dorsal fin 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom. Some days, emerald shiners are helpful to catch walleyes, other days it isn't so crucial.
It's a mixed bag of fish with walleyes and saugers the norm. In addition, jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, sturgeon, tullibees and even a muskie in the mix.
On the Rainy River... Some walleyes, saugers and a few sturgeon are still being caught on the river. A heavier jig to match the current tipped with an emerald shiner is a good choice.
Ice conditions vary greatly, especially with the current of the river. Again, work through a resort for safety and do not venture out on your own.
Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing continues to be good for resorts up at the NW Angle. Good reports of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike and some big crappies in the mix.
A variety of depths are being fished. Some resorts are on shallower structure, which merits more action during the mornings and evenings. Other fish houses are set up deeper off of structure or in deeper mud which is more of a midday bite.
On both ends of the lake, the one - two punch of a jigging line and deadstick combined with ice fishing electronics is the way to go. Electronics can be rented by many resorts and local bait shops.

On the south end... Some below zero and single digit temps this past week have ice thickening. In areas where ice is making progress, so are the weight limits and ability on some ice roads to use light vehicles and wheelhouses. Every ice road has their own rules and restrictions based on ice conditions, follow resort / outfitter updates on social media or contact them directly.
If you are fishing with a resort, they will either allow you to drive out or they will transport you out to the fish house depending upon ice conditions and how they operate their business.
Most ice fishing on the south end of the lake is in 24 - 32 feet of water. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second on a plain hook or an ice fishing jig has been effective.
On the jigging line, aggressive lures such as a rippin rap with rattles and vibration can be good at times. Otherwise, a jigging spoon tipped with a piece of minnow is a staple for the jigging rod.
Vary presentation until you figure out what they want. Some days, if the fish are in a negative mood, go small. Small jigging spoon with a small piece of minnow or even a wax worm. A live minnow on a #4 or #6 plain hook or ice jig six inches - a foot off of the bottom is great for the deadstick.
When fish are more active, the aggressive baits, larger jigging spoon and larger minnow may be helpful. Let the fish tell you what they want by watching electronics.
Saugers and walleyes are the most common catch. As a bonus, jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, tullibees with some sturgeon in the mix.
On the Rainy River... Although most anglers fish the lake, some anglers fish through resorts who ice fish the river and locals fish it as well. The best bite has been morning and evening.
Using a jig and emerald shiner has been the goto for walleyes and saugers. Sturgeon anglers using crawlers if available or emerald shiners with heavier tackle and larger holes.
Ice conditions vary greatly, especially with the current of the river. Again, work through a resort for safety and do not venture out on your own unless you are certain of ice conditions.
Up at the NW Angle... Some good fishing up at the Angle this week. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike and some big crappies in the mix.
Resorts are fishing a variety of structure and non structure. Some fish houses are set targeting goto areas either on top, on the slope or at the base of structure such as reefs, underwater points, etc.
Other fish houses are placed in the deep mud adjacent to the structure. Where you are fishing often dictates what kind of fish you catch and when the best bite takes place. Both areas are having success, but in different ways.
On both ends of the lake, the one - two punch of a jigging line and deadstick combined with ice fishing electronics is the way to go. Electronics can be rented by many resorts and local bait shops.

On the south end... Ice fishing is in full swing and a good bite continues for most anglers. Some very quality walleyes and saugers with mixed in jumbo perch, eelpout, and occasional pike in the mix.
Ice conditions, and consequently, weight limits on ice roads are again improving with the cold weather. Resort fish houses and sleeper fish houses are available. Some ice roads are allowing pickup trucks pulling wheelhouses. Check each individual ice road for specific limits.
With that being said, it is super important to stay on the resort ice roads and do not go off on your own. Resorts and outfitters keep their roads on the best ice. Going off the ice roads and on your own is not a good idea.
Weather report looks cold. If overnight cold temps hold, and the forecast looks good, fish houses on LOW are allowed out through March. In addition, the walleye / sauger season on LOW is an extended season and goes through April 14th. The pike season never ends.
The majority of ice fishing for walleyes and saugers is taking place in 24 - 34 feet of water. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.
Jigging spoons with and without rattles tipped with a full minnow or piece of a minnow in gold, glow red, glow white, pink, and chartreuse, or a combo of these colors, have been good.
On the deadstick, a live minnow on a #4 or #6 plain hook, colored hook or a small ice jig six inches - one foot off of the bottom is effective. Jig the deadstick on occasion to keep the minnow moving and to attract fish.
Pike anglers fishing shallower shoreline breaks and reporting big fish. Pike activity will only increase as we approach the month of March.
On the Rainy River... Most ice fishing is taking place on the lake. There are a couple of resorts that ice fish on the Rainy River. Know ice conditions or work through a resort or outfitter for safety.
Ice conditions on the Rainy River can vary greatly due to current.
Up at the NW Angle... A great week of walleye fishing up at the Angle this week. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike and some big crappies in the mix.
Resorts continue to have fish houses spread out on a number of good spots throughout the Minnesota side of the NW Angle.
Anglers targeting black crappies are doing well just across the border into Ontario. Inquire with NW Angle resorts for info.
Jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is the way to go. Electronics help in determining what the fish want that given day and will up your catch of fish.
