Hall of Fame or not?

Post by bubu dubu. »

In this thread, we can discuss borderline HoF guys.

I'm currently watching some highlights of Manu Ginobili, so I'll start with some Spurs...

Ginobili and Tony Parker...HoF or not?

Their numbers don't pop off the page, neither guy will ever be considered a dominate player (which is what I look for in HoF guys), but they have longevity, very nice numbers, and ring cred.

When dynasties happen, I feel lesser players get in. Spurs were a dynasty, therefore, I think both get in.

Couple other players off the top of my head...

Tim Hardaway (5x all NBA team)
Ben Wallace (5x all NBA, 4x DPOY)
Shawn Kemp (6x all star, 3x all NBA)
Penny Hardaway (3x all NBA (2 times 1st team))
Chris Webber (5x all NBA, ROY, 5x all star)
Steve Kerr (8x champion (5 as player, 3 as coach))

I just think that Manu had more impact and was better player. Most unselfish player of all time as well as being the best 6th man ever.

I don't think either of us are necessarily right or wrong, but heres my case for Parker over Manu,...

Tony...6x all star vs 2 for Manu
4x all NBA vs 2
Finals MVP vs 6th man of the year

Ahhh, I forgot he had a Finals MVP. Then yes I think he should get in. Don't think either of them are first ballot though.

Another name to throw out there...

Grant Hill.

Loads of accomplishments with the Pistons, then derailed by injuries. The committee might put him in for the career he should have had vs the career he actually did have.

Couple other Spurs...LMA and Gasol.

Gasol almost for sure.

LMA I would say no, but you look at the accomplishments (6x star, 5x all NBA), and his career isnt done yet...He'll be a borderline guy.

Both guys are going to be Hall of Famers. Ginobili was also the best player on a Gold Medal winner and a Euro-league Champ and MVP on top of his NBA success.

Nice guy to bring up. Decent accomplishments.

I say no. Even a championship might not put him in now, as he is playing 5th fiddle there.

Don't forget that it's the basketball hall of fame, not NBA hall of fame. Ginobili is obviously getting in, good chance first ballot.

Correct. Its why college accolades and international accolades come into account. If a player like Melo werent already in due to his NBA play (which he is), his Olympic fame, and freshman year at Syracuse pushes him way over the line.

and in the case you are pointing out, Manu.

Sadly Carmelo is probably a HOFer, but what an overrated bum.

Peja Stojakovic just popped into my head tonight.

His prime years were supreme.

Career highlights...
Champion
3x all star
1x all NBA
1x FIBA MVP

Not HoF IMO, but in the conversation of the next tier that is left out.
