Anyone ever look into buying used pinball/arcade games?

Post by Douglas Bubbletrousers »

It seems transportation and shipping would be obnoxious, but it would be cool to have a pinball machine or old Pacman machine.
I don't give a fig for the simplicity on this side of complexity, but I would die for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.

The upkeep on pinball machines sucks big time and the monitors for arcade machines are wearing out. Both are too expensive.

Would love a pinball machine. A friend growing up had one and still has it to this day, they’ve never mentioned anything about maintenance although I’ve never thought to ask. Takes up quite a bit of space.

It sounds cool to have but I think most people would get bored with it pretty quick.

Actually, I checked their site to see if you could just get them online, and I was a little surprised to see that you can get all sorts of arcade machines through Walmart online.

https://www.walmart.com/search/search-n ... %20machine

I think you have to go to the store to get the clearance price for the machines though. They were about $180 for the one that was closest to full size.

I think it would be a better option though because you'd be getting a newer screen for it, and the electronics in general should be better than something made 30 years ago. Since these don't need the coin op stuff they are basically as heavy as the cabinet is since the electronics to run it are about as much as a raspberry pi. So, if the shipping isn't free, it shouldn't be too insane.
I would love to get one of those, even if I only played occasionally. Would be tough call between Centipede and Asteroids.

If you were to get an arcade machine, what game would you get?

Metal Slug? Street Fighter vs X-Men? Daytona?

You can buy one of those new 1up machines with Street Fighter.

I would buy Mortal Kombat. They make one of those also. It's sold out everywhere though.

It includes Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate.

What kind of things do you need to do to pinball machines?

Always wanted one....

Edit: Ohh, and one of those Golden Tee games.

Every single component on the board is a mechanical switch. Keeping all of those in working order is just a bitch mechanically. It takes a lot of time or you pay someone to service them. Imagine if just one mechanism is broken...it ruins the whole game, and their are hundreds that make up a pinball machine.

Probably a fighting game for replayability for me. Marvel Vs. Capcom cabinets were super rad.

Looking closer, it looks like the Centipede cabinet has Missile Command also. Asteroid cabinet has nothing else that interests me, so it would definitely be the Cent/MC one between them, but ... they have a Rampage cabinet with Defender and Joust, two of my favorites.

Cent/MC or Defender/Joust. That's a tough decision. I think I'd still go Cent/MC, because trackball games don't work well on MAME. Not the real cabinet experience, but Defender works fairly with just a controller.

I bought an original 1989 TMNT arcade machine back in 2005. I bought it off eBay - Shipping was ridiculous, but it sure was awesome. I wish I still had it but sold it on craigslist back in 2010 for $1700. I originally paid $1850 after shipping, so I didn't lose much.

I did a little research on the 1up cabinets, and they have gotten some bad reviews.

You can find the control boards with 100's of original arcade games stored in the board. It basically acts as a console with legit arcade controllers. You can find plans to build a cabinet and mount a monitor or you could just plug it into a TV.

They showed some cool build outs on the website. Guys have built them into home bars and have TV mounted behind the bar. The reviews are great but they make them per order, so you may have to wait a bit to get it. Relatively inexpensive to get a real arcade control board and a ton of games.

The first RBI baseball game. It had all-time rosters for 10-ish teams.
I also want a High Speed pinball machine.

Honestly, I would like a Claw Machine. I would put beers and small liquor bottles in it for parties or just myself.
