VR Froobs - Looking for info and suggestions

I was going to buy a VR and now I find there are PC, console and phone headsets. Anyone really into VR and can elaborate on the differences? I'm guessing your phone VR isnt going to be close to PC VR but I also dont want to build a rig just for it. Is anything less than the PC style not worth it?

What do you need to watch the NBA in VR like they show on the TV commercials?

I was thinking video games and just whatever is available. That commercial does look cool though. I'd be into that if they had it for MLB of NHL.
