Saw the Spits at Mammory Lanes on Sunday night and they were incredible. Top speed punk, the two brothers harmonize perfectly, and the one brother absolutely rips on lead when he wants to. The guy in the captain’s hat they had throwing lit black cats into the crowd during the show was a nice touch.

THEN, I heard they were playing a basement show so we went to that afterward and it rocked too!

I forgot to add that I ran into them in the bowling alley bathroom and they gave me a key’s worth.

Perfect night.

ICEAGE

I saw Iceage last night and I think it may have been the best show I've ever seen. Could not sleep afterward. I think they're the best band going right now. The 7th street entry was rocking. The crowd was moving together like on ocean at times, then slamming into eachother other times. People of every age there.

The band is in their mid-20s, from Copenhagen. Their sound is hard to explain. Punk, rock, gypsy, old-world, drone, psychedelic, Romantic, math-rock, poetic, self-aware, at times self-deprecating or humorous. Frequently, their songs go all over the place tempo-wise. Sometimes they'll start a song slow and then, more or less, increase the speed until it's racing at the end. There aren't any other bands doing this, as far as I know. It has a startling effect--it's a rush.

Afterward, my wife and I were having a beer with the bass player and I asked him how they write their songs. They said they write them together. I asked when they met and he made the "this big" gesture a few feet off the ground. Said they met on a Copenhagen street when they were kids. This made sense to me. I don't know how else you can write songs like this.

Their front man is like a less content Jim Morrison. It looks like he's having a great time, throwing himself all over the stage, drunk maybe, but at the same time no smiling. They are incredibly serious, which is refreshing in this age of irony. And man, their little drummer kid is just a beast, as is the guitarist.

Check out their music, and especially their live show the next time they come to town. My guess is they'll be playing First Ave.

Here are some of my favorites from last night:

A little fishing metaphor here in this next one.

All these stagnant words which I confide
Perish in the night
Anyway so,
Here we go again
Always faintly preying
Did I note a tremble on your arm
Thereupon alarmed
Just give in

Make me real
You reel in then you catch it
Catch it, catch it, catch it, catch it, catch it
Come make me real, real
You reel in then you catch it
Catch it, catch it, catch it, catch it:

Here's a good example of their mastery of tempo:

They didn't play these two last night, but this is often how they sound:
