They were pretty big targets at Xfest in 2001, when the crowd was chucking mud at them.

Like King's X, these guys are extremely highly regarded by fellow musicians, but for some reason never caught on with the public. Same with Thin Lizzy.

Roger Cline makes some damn good music. Very underrated and underappreciated musician.

Here are a few more:
Blackfoot
Prong
Mother Love Bone* cmd had a post on this recently. I put an * by them as we'll never really know how big they would've became because of Wood's death. My guess is they could've followed the path of Pearl Jam, which were born out of the ruins of MLB.

Dunno, most belong where they end up.

King's X, my top 5 favorites bands, always had the moniker of greatest band that wasn't, but I totally get why they were not big. Too much prog, too much non-radio friendly music, not relatable enough. Though apparently, they killed it at 94 woodstock and stole the show.

There is a reason AC/DC is so big, people can relate to E...D, D, D...A, A, A, blues scale, E...D, D, D...A, A, A, rinse, repeat.

I felt bad for Winger, other than their looks and stupid lyrics, those mothers could play the shit out their instruments.

I love Son Volt, and the first two albums are amazing but I can understand why they didn't go big. I don't think Jay Farrar has ever wanted to be in a commercially successful band and seems to change directions if things look like they are headed that way.

The name I'll add to the list:

Buffalo Tom

I think it also depends upon how much bigger they could/should be. For instance The Replacements should have been as big as Soul Asylum, but I couldn't have envisioned them getting Pearl Jam or Nirvana big.

That seems like a tough one to put in there. I suppose you could say they should've been bigger if Brad Nowell doesn't die.

True. Feels like No Doubt kind of picked up where they left off and made the big bucks on that sound. Sublime made the sound that many bands in their own shitty way ripped off and cashed in on.

Oddly enough, and I have no idea why this popped in to my head, I was trying to figure out the various "Alternative/Punk" sub-genres the other day, that were all the rage when I was in college. I was coming up with Ska and swing, and was drawing a blank on all the others that kind of dominated at the end of the decade.

The self-titled Sublime album was so damn good. It would've been interesting to see how/if they could've sustained that success. I think you're right in that No Doubt kind of took that torch and ran with it.
