Angry Waters wrote: Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:06 am What's the criteria? I'm a huge Staley fan--lucky to see him live a couple of times. Though music is so subjective, he's not the greatest singer of all-time. But, if you say he is, so be it! I'm not gonna argue!
The criteria is the roobs opinion I guess. I wasn't lucky enough to see Staley live (so jealous) but his range and power are undeniable. I've heard he could rattle your chest with his voice alone...
For the record, Layne is one of my favorite vocalists of all-time. He certainly had his own unique sound. Tons of power, no doubt. However, his range was rather limited. I'm a two-bit vocalist my own self and there's not a note in his discography that I can't hit. As soon as you read this, listen to Soundgarden's "Beyond The Wheel" and talk to me about range!!! Believe me, it doesn't change the fact that Layne Staley had one of the most memorable and beautiful voices of all-time!

So, my two favorite singers off all-time (because it's my opinion) are Phil Anselmo and Axl Rose.
👍 I watched a video a while back and different artist were saying Layne was the most talented vocalist they'd seen. If I find the video later, I'll put it in here.

Chris Cornell and I feel pretty confident in that, though there are a few other great singers.

Define “our time”.

Joe Williams died in 99. Simone in 2003. Redding in 67 at 26 years old.

never was much of a joe williams guy. if bb king had followed williams' path, i probably would have preferred bb in that sort of setting. for pure blues belting though, you can't get past howlin' wolf IMO. singing is just such a personal preference thing. i saw ella on a frank sinatra special once just fucking tear up a scat duet with frank - absolutely white hot brilliance in a way that no other singer can touch - but again, 9 times out of 10 i'd rather listen to billie holiday than ella.

Neither Joe nor BB are for everyone, and I’ve played with BB! Pinch me to this day.

Howling Wolf is indeed great. He’s more toward the universal appeal end.

I like Billie and Ella both. They’re very different so I’m finding it hard to choose one.

Other singers I love that aren’t rock guys:

Bill Withers
Chaka Khan
There are so many disco/funk singers I love (Cheryl Lynn, Donna Summers, Diana Ross—also not disco but still, Vicky Sue Robinson). Could do a whole thread on that.
Luther Vandross
Barry White
Barry Gibb

This thread on another board would be night and day. ;)

vocalists just either hit you or they don't. it might not have to do with range or power, stamina, whatever. it's an individual's voice - so it's special. one of my favorites, never talked about much here because his base isn't the USA - is caetano veloso. how many middle aged male vocalists do you know who would dare to do this kind of delicacy with their falsetto? it's fucking brilliant.

i liked adele at first, and she's still appealing as a person - but she sings herself out. wrecks her voice and you can hear it on some songs - just a tad flat throughout because he voice has been damaged and she's lost that necessary bit of control.

If you’re going to be a douche, why not Luciano fucking Pavarotti or Placido fucking Domingo? Either of them could sing circles around Otis fucking Redding.

You're strange. I called you out on an inconsistency in your hipster anti-rock take and now you want to be a baby about it. Boo-hoo.

Yes, Otis Redding was a good singer. Thanks for the breaking news. You have such broad and varied taste. We could all learn something from you. Keep it up!

Your take makes zero sense.

There is no inconsistency in my take.

I am not anti-rock. Look at my sig, dumbass.

Non-rock music is not hipster.

Opera is not popular music. Soul and jazz and rock are.

You are the strange one.

You want to talk about music like an expert but you are a person whose knowledge of music is confined to one solitary Tool album purchase per decade.

Meanwhile, I’m a rock musician who who toured Europe, a jazz musician who played with BB King and Prince’s NPG band, and has a degree in music theory and composition.

You lose.
