Great 90s Albums
Try to dig a little deeper than "Nevermind" and "The Chronic" and post some really good start-to-finish albums that may have been overlooked from a good, but really over-exposed and over-hyped era of music. You don't need to go super-obscure for your hipster cred here, but just a reminder of something we may have forgotten.
Here's a few to kick things off:
Toadies - "Rubberneck." Obviously, this was inspired by my pick for the "never turn off the radio" thread, or whatever that was called. But this album is more than just "Possum Kingdom." It's a damn good southern-rock-meets-Seattle-grunge record, start to finish.
Highlights: "Possum Kingdom," "I Come From the Water," and "I Burn."
Spacehog - "The Chinese Album." They're more famous for their song "In the Meantime" off the previous record "Resident Alien," but "The Chinese Album is a much better record start-to-finish. It's very pop-rock with strong hooks and melody. These guys were kind of in the post-grunge wave, but owed more to David Bowie and Queen than anything from Seattle.
Highlights: "One of These Days" (samples the Talking Heads to the point where David Byrne and the rest of the band got a songwriting credit), "Mungo City," and "Almond Kisses" (with Michael Stipe from REM).
David Bowie - "Outside." Weird to put a Bowie record in a 90s music thread, but this is a seriously great album. He was working with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails at the time and was inspired by the "Industrial" scene. This was to be part one of a three part concept record series telling a story of a futuristic art-murderer (The Minotaur), a missing child (Baby Grace), and the detective trying to solve the case (Nathan Adler). The blending of Bowie's rich voice and narrative flair with the liquid guitar stylings of Reeves Gabriels and industrial-styled ryhthms created something really unique. Unfortunately, Bowie never finished the trilogy, but we are left with a great, if incomplete, album.
Highlights: "Outside," "The Heart's Filthy Lesson," and "The Motel."
Radiohead - "The Bends." This might be the perfect 90s pop/rock album. I think these guys kind of went art-rock critic-darling nuts after this record, but "The Bends" is pure catchy bliss. I love this record.
Highlights: "The Bends," "Fake Plastic Trees," and "My Iron Lung."
Sponge - "Wax Ecstatic." Kind of like Spacehog above, they are more famous for a single of their preceding album "Rotting Pinata" called "Molly (16 Candles)." Wax Ecstatic takes a darker turn from the college-rock feel of "Rotting Pinata." The result is a much more mature and sophisticated album that is a solid listen pretty much all the way through.
Highlights: "The Drag Queens of Memphis," "I Am Anastasia," and "Have You Seen Mary?"
Check 'em out. What you got?

I thought "Jagged Little Pill" was great by Alanis Morrisette......my first CD.
"Dookie" and "Nimrod" by the boys in Green.
I also enjoyed The Verve Pipes "Villains"

They were great 90's albums!!! You should be more shocked I named 2 non Green Day albums. I could have named all of them!! But Nimrod was my first Green Day album....holds a special place in my heart and saved me from bad rap music.Beef Supreme wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2019 10:51 pmWhy, I'm shocked that the Raven weighed in with a Green Day nomination.Straight Edge Raven wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2019 10:40 pm I thought "Jagged Little Pill" was great by Alanis Morrisette......my first CD.

Re: Great 90s Albums
My life changing albums from the 90's:
AIC - Dirt (Masterpiece)
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (I remember driving my mom's Pontiac station-wagon and Cherub Rock came on the radio, "WTF is this?!?!?)
Extreme - Pornograffitti (Best non-solo guitar album of the 90's, Nuno is a beast)
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power (Listen to Cowboys more now but whatever)
Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare (Best rock solo guitar album ever?)
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple (I found Core to be too slick and studio perfect if that makes any sense.)
Listened to a bunch of other stuff obviously but those were the ones I was hooked first time i heard it.

A friend of mine had a brother in college at Iowa and he turned him on to that album when it came out. Really good stuff. He did the same with the first Rage Against The Machine album.Moses Scurry wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 10:19 am My life changing albums from the 90's:

Petty did a sort of unplugged Storytellers for MTV shortly before the Echo album was released. Absolutely awesome episode, and I was always pissed they didn't make an actual album out of it.weimy froob wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 10:56 amit counts-and it's a two-three times a year play for me. excellent.

Re: Great 90s Albums
Too many to possibly list... I have a box full of cassettes from the 1990s. So much rap. Too much rap. Some rock in there, but by the time rock got good outside of Nirvana the wave had kind of passed. The Brit Pop wave was great, but I got into that just about the time that the bands started to release utter crap. I can't remember the specific cassettes/albums, but here is a list of who I remember being solid!
Eazy-E (Eazy Does It)
Ice Cube (Predator)
NWA (All)
Public Enemy
Scarface (Diary)
Portishead (Dummy)
Wu Tang
Method Man (Tical)
2 Pac's first album - rest wasn't as good
Digital Underground (Sex Packets - AWESOME ALBUM ALL THE WAY THROUGH!)
Ghetto Boys
LL Cool J (Momma Said Knock you out)
Tribe Called Quest
Skee-Lo
Too Short
Ice-T
Busta Rhymes
Mariah Carey (I thought she was hot for the first two albums)
Soundgarden
Bush
Sublime
I should go through my 100s of cassettes from the era!

Lake of Fire and Plateau are also both fantastic. The Nirvana/Cobain written songs on that album are obviously solid to say the least, but the covers are next-level good and is part of what sets it apart from the other unplugged/live albums from that era. .weimy froob wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 11:21 amBeef Supreme wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 11:19 am“Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” still gives me chills.weimy froob wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 10:56 am

Re: Great 90s Albums
Agreed 100%. I remarked on that very point after I heard the recent Metallica unplugged concert. Their stuff was neat, but their covers of songs by Nazareth, blue oyster cult, and deep purple really set it apart. Just like Nirvana did 25 years ago.Dude wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 12:20 pmLake of Fire and Plateau are also both fantastic. Re: Great 90s Albums
We did end up with a few more iconic and decade defining albums here than I planned, but that’s okay. Good discussion.
I support then nomination of “The Colour and the Shape” by the Foo Fighters. Great album, start to finish. “February Stars” rocks.
I’ll add another: “Let Love In” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Masterpiece.

Here's a couple great 90's albums in my recent rotation. Two sides of the coin. Both debut records. One recognized as a seminal release. The other got dropped by their record label. Both excellent pieces of work.
