MF Doom

Post by BBG »

Probably the most consistent underground artist that ever did it. However, he is not really underground: he has his followers and they are loyal because he is consistently putting out quality music with smart, intelligent flows. Jazzy production over hard drums with a unique flavor that is all about positivity:

He was superb. Just superb. Truly a mad scientist of lyrics. One of those emcees you can dissect his words over and over and over again.

Sad to say that his last really solid record was Mmm Food in 2004. Mouse and The Mask with Danger Mouse was okay, but it's a weird Adult Swim concept album. I was at the record release party for Mmm Food album. I think it was at the old Quest. I remember going buck wild rapping along with Dead Bent.

Came up as Zev Love X with KMD. Their first record and the follow up, the unreleased Black Bastards, are still solid ass records.

Also him bailing out at shows and throwing imposters later on stage soured a lot of folks. That 1999 period to about 2005 though. You couldn't touch Doom.

Great Day is Doom busting rhymes at his zenith. Too good.

"Looks like it's gonna be a great day today
To get some fresh air like a stray on a straightaway
Hey you, got a light? Nah, a Bud Light
Early in the morning, face crud from like a mud fight
Lookie here, it's just the way the cookie tear
Prepare to get hurt and mangled like Kurt Angle rookie year
The rocket scientist, with the pocket wine list
Some even say he might need some pussychiatrist
DOOM, are you pondering what I'm pondering?
Yes, but why would the darn thing be wandering?
She's like a foundling, barely worth fondling
My posse's on Broadway like Mama I Want to Sing
Mad plays the bass like the race card
Villain on the case to break shards and leave her face scarred
Groovy, dude! Not to prove to be rude
But this stuff is like what you might put on movie food
Uh, what is jalapeños?
Get it like a whuppin' when you holla at your seniors
Dolla he can overhear the hashish vena
He just came from over there, the grass is greener
Last wish: I wish I had two more wishes
And I wish they fixed the door to the matrix, there's mad glitches
Spit so many verses sometimes my jaw twitches
One thing this party could use is more... booze
Put yourself in your own shoes
And stay away from all those pairs of busted Timbs you don't use
He only keep 'em to decorate
If you wanna peep him, select a date
And bring a deep check, like "Check, mate"
I kid you not, on the dotted line signed
Ever since a minor, kids considered him some kind of Einstein
On a diamond mine grind, she was dumb fine
But not quite the type that you might want to wine and dine
Couldn't find a pen, had to think of a new trick
This one he wrote in cold blood with a toothpick
On second thought, it's too thick
His assistant said: "Doom, you sick, " he said "True" through acoustics
Psycho, his flow is drowned in Lawry's seasoning
With micropower he's sound and right reasoning
It's easy as pi, 3.14
One more one false move and they're done for"
"Come up off your smooth talk player, this raspy. You stuck on Morse code player, this ASCII."

Was good at one time. Madvillian was a great album. Turned into a lazy, rich, b loated addict at the end though.

From having stand ins at his shows lip syncing to some poor albums at the end. I really soured on him.

After reading through the thread, I see YBBR had said this. Exactly my opinion.

I like Viktor Vaughn and MadVillian album the best.

I thought mm food was wack and pretty much everything after.

It says a lot that you 2 had the exact same take. You are both elite musical minds, but there are some legit criticisms of Doom and the lip syncing and rapping over his own records is a crime in this genre, however, he has made so much great music I tend to overlook some of his mistakes

I couldn't really get into Key to the Kuffs either. Teaming up with Jneiro Jarel, who I think is extremely talented. Jarel's Craft of the Lost Art and Three Piece Puzzle are just really great and incredibly interesting hip-hop albums.

I guess at some point in the last 5 years, I stopped checking out what Doom was doing. And that does kinda suck because at one point I thought he was really among the top of the top. So I guess I can't even really speak to his more recent stuff.

MF'n Doom--how about Weedeater, (the mighty Kirk's) Crowbar, and Corrosion of Conformity on Feb. 8th at The Fine Line? Not sure where the line gets blurred between doom/stoner/sludge but I know we've got it all covered with that lineup.

His AM radio style sampled beats he produced on Operation Doomsday and the like were just sooooo cool. They sound great and are interesting as hell to listen to. Nobody really sounded like that. At all. BBG posting Rhymes Like Dimes which is one of my favorites as well.

MF DOOM, Count Bass D, MF Grimm. I'm pretty sure that's the Count on the MPC. The other two for sure.
