*Your Name* Festival

Post by Angry Waters »

Fellow music chat rubes, we get to venture into fantasy land with this thread. And, this one has the potential to be all-inclusive genre-wise. On this task, you get to plan your very own festival with the bands/artists--past or present--of your choosing. You can pick the band's lineup as well as make their set-list. We'll put a few rules on this. First, it's one-day only! To make this difficult, I'll put an arbitrary limit of 5 bands/artists as each will be allowed to play their full set. In no particular order here is my dream show:

Jimi Hendrix Obvious. I would simply like to say I've seen the GOAT.

Led Zeppelin I would really like to see 'Kashmir', 'Achilles', and 'Levee', amongst many others. Sadly, I've never seen any of them in person.

The Rolling Stones with Mick Taylor. The set-list would include "Time Waits for No One" so I can hear that guitar solo live.

Pantera My co-favorite band of all-time. I miss these guys so damn much...I saw them 9 times. Seeing them for a 10th time would (have been) be a cool little tribute to 'Dime'. The great thing about this band, on a personal level, is that there's no song in their catalog that I NEED to see but didn't. I got Cemetary Gates (w/high vocal), Heresy, Floods (w/outtro solo), 3rd Arm, etc... all crossed off the list back in the day.

GN'R My other co-favorite of all-time. Seen Axl/Slash 10 times, but never the original lineup. So, in my dream-world scenario, it would be the original lineup playing 'Appetite' front-to-back.

Narrowly missing the cut would be The Doors (more or less to see what Jim would do), Thin Lizzy, and Skynyrd.

Dude....don't waste a pick on Heart. They're still touring right now and they kick ass. You don't need to add them to a fantasy lineup. Have them play in the parking lot if you absolutely must.

Cool thread idea! Gonna have to think about this.

1. Queen
2. Beatles (in their later years)
3. Rage Against the Machine
4. Waylon Jennings
5. Jimi Hendrix

Only one I'm debating is Led Zeppelin instead of RATM.

Not sure how, but I forgot to include Queen--as least as an honorable mention. Casual Queen fan, but I sure I wish I could've seen Freddie do his thing live. Nice Waylon mention, too. I'd probably cheat a little and give The Highwaymen an honorable mention listing.

Just my own personal scenario would probably be something like this:

1. Opening act - Something mild to ease in, maybe Velvet Underground
2. Faith No More - Mike Patton is awesome
3. The Doors - Would've loved to see Morrison live just once
4. The Cult - Just my personal fave band ever for some reason
5. Nick Cave and Bad seeds from their wilder days playing their rocking songs, not the somber shit.
I apologize in advance if what I just said offended or upset you.

Put Waylon on my line-up too. "I've Always Been Crazy" and The Highwaymen.

Well, are you gonna break the news to the Wilson sisters or should I? Because you can't have 6 in your lineup.

Came back to this thread to see if I could bump someone from my lineup and replace with Fats Domino.

Not sure yet. I think I have a pretty solid lineup.

1. Alice in Chains - The whole festival starts with "AHHHH" from Them Bones and continues to rock.
2. Pantera - Kick people in the balls set.
3. Metallica - I make them play the whole album ...And Justice for All
4. Led Zeppelin - They only get to play songs from Houses of the Holy on.
5. Van Halen - End with the partiest partying band of all time.

1. Tool (Aenima + Greatest Hits) - little loosener to get people in the mood
2. Smashing Pumpkins (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) - Little bit of everything all rolled into one set
3. Queens of the Stoneage (Anything from 'Songs for the Deaf' backwards with Dave Grohl on drums) - Song for the dead and better living through Chemistry are two the best live songs ever
4. Sepultura (Chaos AD + Greatest Hits and obviously with the Cavalera brothers) - Turn it up to 11.
5. Rammstein (Greatest Hits) - Just to burn the whole f@cking place down

In the carpark :- Machine Head (the Blackening + Greatest Hits)

Also if any of you who live in minnesota aren''t going to see Rammstein next year at the US Bank you are making a big mistake.

Always found Rammsteins music to be uninspired and felt they are doing metal ironically. The Imagine Dragons of metal. 8-)

The Hank Mobley core group musicians. Mobley, Grant Green, Wynton Kelly, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones. Maybe big John Patton too. Joe Henderson, Blue Mitchell etc... so many of these guys. (They made a lot of amazing jazz records with and for each other on dates in the late 50's through mid 60's. Yeah, hard bop my favorite era and style of jazz. So balanced has the gospel and soutul chords and progressions with the improvisational and virtuosity of bop.)
Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions
David Bowie
Stevie Wonder
James Brown

I hate going sooo heavy on soul. I was going to pick one from my 4 favorite genres and Bowie who is a genius. Jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop but Curtis is dead and one of popular music greatest songwriters. Stevie Wonder has an embarrassment of riches in wonderful music and James fucking Brown. Hardest working man in showbiz and seeing his hottest show with The JBs? I have to see that shit. Feel like the performances would be seared in my brain for all times.
