What type of smoker do you have?

Post by PurpleFloyd »

I have an electric. Mostly I like making sausage, snack sticks etc but also love to do Pork, Turkey, Chicken, Prime rib and other things as well.

Years back I used exclusively Hickory but now most of the time I use apple but also use mesquite and cherry.

Coal, double barrel smoker.
I dont think electrics should be allowed in competitions.
My cousin, a judge in competitions and champion bbq guy says they are great and easy of course. But he does like it when he gets to judge a contest that is coal/wood only.

I have once of those cheap Brinkman bullet smokers and use lump charcoal (Royal Oak) and various wood chips. I modified it a little bit. Put a better temperate gauge on it and grilled three holes in the lower pan to help with airflow. It works well for me but I plan to get a better one down the road. Just using this to play around with smoking right now.

I want a electric one for doing jerky and long smokes too.

Just got a Traeger pellet smoker/grill for Xmas. I was skeptical when people told me how much better food was a pellet grill vs a gas grill.....

One round of steaks and chicken and I’m completely sold. Amazing.

I have a Cookshack Smokette. It's built like a tank and uses wood chunks. I found a really good smoker stuff store locally in Shakopee. They have high end residential and commercial stuff as well as wood chunks/pellets etc.

I have a Cabelas electric smoker I found on the curb. It works and the grates were even brand new! (Two out of three handles were broken before i closed the garage door on it.) 8-)

I have a Bradley smoker. It's fine, but doesn't hold temp very well when it's cooler or windy outside. So far, I've only done chickens and sausages. I'm still trying to find the time to throw down a pork shoulder or brisket this summer.

I have a Texas offset stick burner, burning oak splits. Real fire, no electric or gas assist.

I smoke at 275 F since I'm burning logs, the coals are the best and you get a clean good smoke and heat for the meat.

just wait till that thing plugs up. Those things require more maintenance then a gas grill. which most people will not do.

It's definitely a massive cringe moment when someone tells me they use an electric smoker, "it does all the work" they say. It doesn't taste nearly as good as real smokers that use a chimney starter and charcoal and/or wood of your choice.

My Weber smokey mountain isn't as nice as your offset smoker but she definitely does the job!

What kind of wood you got there stacked up?

I also have a thermopro, one in the meat and one in the heat.

Weber Smokey mountain is cool. I have some buddies with that.

This is oak. I like it because it burns long, neutral, and even heat. Doesn’t fluctuate much.

I have a campchef woodwind (pellets) with the sear station. Had a weber Smokey mountain and it was fine but more work than I wanted to put in. Sear station is money though.

Traegar. I'm terrible about taking care of the pellets. Remember what I have in it. Not taking it out for storage.

But it works soo good and is soo easy.

Just picked up the Masterbuilt gravity charcoal grill. So far I’m very happy with the way it cooks. It definitely uses more charcoal than my pellet grill used but the temperature is much more even as the fire is offset in the side box rather than in the center of the grill like a pellet grill.

Yeah my older brother bought one this spring too upgrading from a Camp Chef Pellet smoker.

How many times have you used it and post some photos soon bro.
