I am a terrible person...

Post by Badbeat » Fri Aug 16, 2019 8:46 pm

My 6 year old had her first gymnastics competition tonight (beginner girls) and I found myself wishing misfortune on the other young ladies in her class...

My daughter took 6th yet I pointed out some of her mistakes instead of only telling her how great she did.

I need to go back to dad school...

I've always very competitive myself and I think I am now living my dreams through her.

I’m glad I never had kids. I think I would be too honest.

Tell me who didn't want to be Mary Lou Retton as a kid?

Recite this every time you want to correct her in any competition ... to what end?

If she tucks better during a tumble ... what difference will it make when she quits at 9?
If she pays better attention to what the other girls better than her are doing ... will it have any impact as to who competes in the uneven bars in high school?
When you remind her of three other things she could do better and she silently wishes you wouldn't come to anymore meets ...

to what end, my friend ... to what end?

I think the St. John’s football coach as a famous quote on the lines of “positive compliments turn losers into winners”.

The fact you recognized said mistake kinda makes me think you’ll right the ship next time etc etc

You corrected her? In gymnastics? So you’re an expert at gymnastics?

You’re probably not as bad as you think. True assholes don’t k know/care when they make mistakes.

yep. he realized he done wrong and if he follows all the advice in this thread he'll do better going forward. i think things are going to work out.
Spoiler:
unless he's got the next simone biles. then it's probably good to be critical of these performances. tiger's woods dad would rattle his keys while a young tiger was lining up his putts on the green.

If you recognize this, you're on the right track...especially so early. You'll be fine, since you caught it already.

When you really have to be careful is if/when you become their actual coach. That's an extremely tricky balance, as I'm finding out as my kids are getting older. There's a very fine line between being a coach and being a dad.

Holy Crap!
I am going to turn 57 in 2 weeks. The only thing I will be coaching her on is taking her meds everyday.

Nothing wrong with some constructive criticism.
I hope you didn’t ignore that overall she did well.

Wishing for other kids to fall flat on their face is perfectly normal

She's six. So she and the rest of the kids are just having fun. So she doesn't need to hear what she did wrong. She needs to hear your support and nothing else. Wishing misfortune to 6 year olds is fucking gross.

Nothing wrong with what you did. Kids wanna be winners no matter what age. How is anyone supposed to get better if they dont know what they need to work on? You dont have to tell her what she did bad, just tell her what she could do better. Its all on how you word it.
Nobody should ever be OK with being 6th. Dont pussify yourself with that millennial "everyone gets a ribbon" BS. She'll respect you more when shes older.....and a winner

Yes , But at the age of 6 I don't think its that important , Id say its more important to have fun at what ever sport your doing at that age.

Iowa Hawkeyes defeated Mississippi state way down there on January 1st because they are Iowa farm boys, offensive lineman not lazy turds. Some SEC teams just think they are good, but I like the Gophers too.
