Looks like i'm going to Vegas on October 27.....

EDIT: Never fucking mind....it's somehow already sold out and the cheapest tickets on StubHub are $475/each.

Well done UMD.

I think the real lesson is that unless you have a truly elite team, you need to catch a break or two along the way as well. Hell, they needed a series of huge breaks just to edge the Gophers for that final tournament spot. To be fair though, the Bulldogs should have edged them by a more substantial margin to begin with based on the fact that they won four more regular season games, actually made it their own conference's tournament, and last, but not least, beat them in their only head to head meeting.
Definitely agree on the catching breaks along the way. Heck, the two finalists needed OT to get out of round one - and if not for some puck luck neither one would have advanced. That's what makes the NCAA hockey tourney even better than the hoops version - truly anyone that makes the field of 16 can win it all. Just need to win 4 straight games & you're the champ (doesn't mean 4 straight is easy, but Loyola Chicago won 4 straight and still wasn't national champ in basketball).

St Cloud hired UMD asst coach Brett Larson- https://www.sctimes.com/story/sports/co ... 515360002/

Seems like a good hire. Nice to see Jimmy Schuldt quoted in the article. Hopefully he comes back for his senior year.

Some good college candidates are in the NYR head coaching mix. Montgomery (U of Denver), Quinn (BU) and Sandelin (Minn Duluth). Interesting.

Jimmy is coming back for his senior year. Sure wish we saw more of that.

Raboin leaving to join Motzko. Former Husky Nick Oliver gets the SCSU assistant job.

Yeah, somethin has got to change and hopefully Motzko can be a part of that solution. It's gotten so stale and boring at these games that I have minimal interest in going to a game.....nevah thought I'd say that about Golden Gopher hockey.... :pissed:

This series with Duluth is fun. Unfortunately, the fun's going to crash when the Big Ten season starts.

Damn, Gophers were up 3-0, then decided to just start marching to the penalty box in the 2nd period. 3-2 game now. Couple Gophers ejected.

4-2 now as I type this.

Man, I haven't really followed the Gophers since the Bjugstad and Rau days. Might have to follow these guys this year.

Problem I have with following the Gophers, is I never know how long these kids are staying. Im looking up these players who are scoring goals, and most have already been drafted, and they are freshmen. Motzko has said they need to get kids who will stay longer, so I guess we'll see. Is he going to sacrifice talent to build up some experience?

Gophers ranked #13 before this series. Do they jump into the top 5 with a win and tie vs #1?

On the other side, how far does UMD drop?

Polls mean absolutely nothing until we get to February. Then it’s up to the pairwise rankings to see who makes the tourney. Early polls are good for conversations and nothing else.

Bulldogs dropped to 3 Gophers moved up to 6

Not to take anything away from the Gophers, but they caught UMD at a good time. Fully healthy, playing a squad suffering from a National Championship hangover. They were gunning for the defending National Champs, if only for a weekend. The Bulldogs probably didn't even look at this much differently than they would have a different non-conference matchup against Bemidji or Mankato. Quite simply the series was just a lot more important to MN than it was to UMD. Think about how the mighty have fallen? Not that long ago, a team like the Bulldogs or SCSU would almost define their season based on how well they did against the Gophers, now it's the exact opposite, especially with UMD. Don't get me wrong though, the Gophs have a pretty decent squad and I like the new coach. They will be there in March when the Tournament begins but will likely get taken behind the woodshed as soon as they face an NCHC school.

It needs to be a fine balance.

You want the best players coming to your program even if it means they stay for a year or two but you can't build your program around those players. You need a small ahndful of the top notch NHL drafted players surrounded by a couple handfuls of 2nd or 3rd tier players who are still good but will benefit from 4 years at the program before moving on.
