That took a left turn.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was shot in the back by a gunman who mistook him for the real target, another man who was seated at the same table at an outdoor cafe, Dominican officials said Wednesday.

The Dominican Republic's attorney general and the national police director told reporters that the attempted murder was ordered from the United States by Victor Hugo Gomez, an associate of Mexico's Gulf Cartel. They said Gomez had hired a gang of killers to eliminate his cousin, whom Gomez suspected of turning him in to Dominican drug investigators in 2011.

The cousin, Sixto David Fernandez, was seated with the former baseball star on the night of June 9, when a gunman approached and fired a single shot at Ortiz, the officials said. Fernandez owned an auto-repair shop and was friends with Ortiz, according to Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez and Maj. Gen. Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, director of the Dominican Republic's national police

How Dominicans are reacting to mistaken identity claim in David Ortiz shooting

How could David Ortiz possibly be mistaken for anyone else in his hometown of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic?

According to CNN’s Rey Sanchez, that’s a question many in Ortiz’s homeland are now asking out loud and privately.

On Wednesday, authorities in the Dominican Republic said the June 9 shooting of Ortiz at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo was a case of mistaken identity. That Sixto David Fernandez, who was also seated at Ortiz’s table, was the intended target of alleged mastermind Victor Hugo Gomez.

The announcement was met with skepticism in the Dominican Republic and beyond. That’s when Sanchez decided to reach out to get a real sense of how people in the Dominican were reacting.

The responses hit both ends of the spectrum. Some were concerned about misleading information being fed by the government. Others expressed confidence in the authority’s findings.

How do you mistake these two?

I think DO was obviously the target, but why are they lying about that? They already got caught, whats the difference whether they intended to kill DO, or Sixto?

David Ortiz undergoes third surgery after experiencing complications from gunshot wound

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz underwent a third surgery stemming from the gunshot wound he suffered in an attack in his native Dominican Republic.

In a statement released through the Red Sox, Tiffany Ortiz, David’s wife, said her husband was dealing with “complications resulting from his gunshot wound.”

“Earlier this week, David underwent a third surgery for complications resulting from his gunshot wound. The operation was performed by Dr. David King at Massachusetts General Hospital. David is recovering well and is in good spirits,” her statement said.

“We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during this difficult time.”

Ortiz, 43, is still recovering at a Boston hospital after being shot on June 9 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Ortiz underwent emergency surgery and had to have his gallbladder and part of his intestine removed.

The next day, he was airlifted to Boston and underwent a second surgery. Ortiz’s condition was upgraded to good on June 18, but he has remained hospitalized in the weeks since.

He probably was adulterous and for that, they kept it private. I certainly would. Reminds me of the ending in Batman: The Dark Knight, and The Watchmen
