Buxton gained 21 pounds

Post by RALPH MALPH »

of muscle this off-season

Byron Buxton said Saturday that he's gained 21 pounds of muscle this offseason.

The young outfielder was limited to just 64 games last season due to multiple injuries and he's hopeful that the added muscle will help keep him healthy. "If I want to play the way that I want to play and run into walls, I’ve got to have a little bit more cushion," Buxton said. Buxton's fantasy ceiling remains super high, but he's not guaranteed a starting job and will need to show that he can stay on the field and produce.

I dont think you just lose speed. Maybe he'll be slightly slower than Billy Hamilton, instead of slightly faster. It's not like he'll be David Ortiz out there.

As long as he doesn't go The Psycho Cordova on the bit, we'll be fine.

i remember when trout gained a bunch of muscle after his rookie year. ( not comparing Buxton to trout, that would be absurd)
but everyone was concerned he muscled up too much.

we all know how that turned out

Byron Buxton was removed from Friday's Grapefruit League game after colliding with Xander Bogaerts during a run down.
Buxton appeared to be alright afterwards, and remained on his feet, but after a lengthy discussion with manager Rocco Baldelli, the decision was made to remove Buxton from the game. It's likely that the Twins are simply taking things cautiously here, but look for an update on his status shortly.

Sure. Watch him breakout this year, and go to the Yankees next year because of his 1-year deal.

It's been 32 years since one of MN's four major sports teams has been to the Championship/Superbowl.
Every single year is failure until we win one. 4 teams, 32 years. That's roughly 128 consecutive failed seasons.

The general rule of thumb is that guys are under team control for the first 6 years of their big league career. Usually its 3 years of close to minimum deals followed by 3 years of arbitration. That can be 2 and 4 under certain circumstances, but that's not really important.

I thought he was signed a cheapo 1 year deal/extension.

He was arbitration-eligible this year and he and the Twins settled for $1.7 million. He'll be arbitration-eligible each of the next two offseasons, as well, as long as he doesn't sign a long term extension with the Twins. All they have to do is offer him arbitration and he won't be able to sign with anyone else. The only way he becomes a free agent prior to the winter of 2022 is if the Twins non-tender him at some point and allow him to hit the market. That's how David Ortiz was free to sign with the Red Sox when he did.
