The World Series begins Tuesday, and we have the Red Sox (No. 1 in payroll according to Spotrac.com) against the Dodgers (No. 3) — an accurate reflection of the inequality that exists in the sport.
I used to be pro salary cap, but after seeing what's happening in the NHL, I'm fine the way things are now. Parity for the sake of parity leads to too many mediocre teams. Even the big spenders still have to have at least a little bit of talent from their farm systems to succeed. Wish I were a bit older to have seen some of those 80s Oilers teams.
a different brand of hockey for sure. you can still watch those games though. probably the best year of playoff hockey i enjoyed was the spring of 1981 when the north stars went on their run. they ran into that dynasty before the oilers though and it all came down in a 4-1 thud. still it was fun while it lasted.

And Milwaukee was 26th..

Would the story have existed if the Brewers had beaten the Dodgers in game 7?

2017 World Series?
Dodgers were #1 payroll
Astros? 18th.

2016 World Series?
Cubs 14th
Indians 24th

2015 World Series?
Mets 21st
Royals 16th

Should I keep going?

The payroll as a guide to who is going to win is a myth.
i understand that. i just hope every year that the mega payroll teams aren't rewarded.
Owners that invest more into their teams shouldn't be rewarded? That makes zero sense.

baseball isn't played on a level playing field when it comes to revenue generating avenues for these teams. owners run these things as a business. if you have the revenue streams of the yankees, red sox or the dodgers it's easier to build a team that plays baseball in late october.

you can build a championship team and live within a constrained budget. it's just more difficult. more luck needed-and mistakes you might make are much harder to overcome.

John Henry is worth about a billion dollars less than Carl Pohlad was at the time of his death. There is no law against using your own personal finances towards payroll, it's just that some owners refuse to. Don't blame the Yankees and Red Sox for having owners willing to spend, I'd be more upset with owners with lower payrolls for refusing to. There is no such thing as "small market" owners in baseball, they are all worth billions.

Anybody even watching?

I'm not. I found this to be funny. Two of the most liked comments on twitter tonight...

Why on earth would anyone watch baseball when there’s a perfectly good Bucks/Sixers game going on?

I've been watching the World Series since I was 10 (happened to be the Bill Buckner series), but I have to say I'm more interested in the Bucks-Sixers game. I could be an outlier, but seems like a problem for the MLB

I am a sports, sports, sports is your whole life sports guy. I know players on college football and basketball teams for Fs sake. I know who hardly a hand full of guy's in the MLB anymore. Most people have no idea who these guy's are.

MLB needs to market better or something.

i'm flipping through and catching lots of it. the three run inning by boston which put the game away. they showed the stats and this team is clutch and i think it's just going to be their year. all the two out runs they've scored this post-season. more than half. and in this series it's been just about every one.

Bottom of the 16th. I'd love to fall asleep and wake up to see it still going in the 32nd inning.

They're really gonna change the rules after this game by starting extra innings with a runner on base, aren't they?

no.

if people can't deal with how the game is played don't watch. the game will go on long after we're all dead. quit messing with it to please a current audience and the collective attention deficit disorder of the country. real tough loss for the red sox though after getting the clutch 8th inning home run. dodgers win tonight and they've got more than a chip and a chair going forward.

I hope they leave the rules alone again too, but I feel it's more of a matter of "when" than "if". If they're going to change anything, I'd rather see the rules be the same between the 2 leagues, DH or not.

Tonight is going to be REALLY interesting. Weekend full of baseball, lots of hours on the field, elimination game.

Price v Kershaw.

Curious how Kershaw pitches faced with an elimination game.

Kershaw is dogshit. What's the point of having him if he folds in the playoffs? Seriously?

The city of Boston has won 11 championships since 2011. Ranging from the NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL. That's impressive as shit.

Must be nice.

I wonder how long it will take the Twin Cities to get that many in those leagues? 300 years? 4oo years?

Twins are just a few years away. Or maybe it's a few years after the next few years assuming everyone's shoulders stay healthy and they sign Blake Snell.
