They should have opted for the cheaper replacement like the Twins did with Odorrizle and Lynn.

That would be like Mike Glennon and Mark Sanchez lulz.
The Twins went for Darvish and he went to Chicago. Thank God he did too, because that has been an awful start to a 6 year contract.

It's been half of a season out of 6 years lol. Doesn't matter anyway as the Twins were never really in play to get him.

Who's this coming season's rumors? Bryce Harper? Only to end up with the return of Kurt Suzuki

You really believe the Twins put forth a legitimate effort to get Darvish? I'll bet they offered like 3/4th's (probably more like 1/2) at best of what he actually got. Doubt they were ever serious about getting him and only made it seem that way so they could say "Awww shucks, we tried but just couldn't get him".

There were multiple reports that had their offer at 5/100, they got beat out by 6/126. I'm glad they did, because even if he comes back healthy and effective this year, he isn't going to be for the entirety of that contract.

I still refuse to believe those reports were real. It is so out of character for the Twins to do anything like that.

They have "Reports" every year they are in on someone big. That's the running joke. They never get anyone however and then the player they sign is not a notch or two below. It's some dumpster fire player they get for cheap.

It's pretty hard to argue this when the Twins have really never signed a big FA. How is that even possible in today's world of pro sports?!?

Get all excited for new GM's etc.. It doesn't matter. Ownership runs this organization one way and it's not to win.

The ownership is bad, but not necessarily because they are not spending money. It's because they are spending what money they have very stupidly. They tore up Hughes' contract and gave him an unnecessary extension after one good season. The contract that they gave to Nolasco was a waste and Santana outside of about a year and a half has been awful, suspended or hurt. Even wasting time with mediocre trash like Correia and Pelfrey.

They were too loyal to Gardy and too loyal to TR, things got stale.

That ballpark has been or will be empty 6 out of the 9 Septembers that the team has played there and it rests squarely on ownership. But not because they are being cheap. The highest three payrolls in team history are 2018, 2011 and 2016 in that order. All bad teams, the worst in team history in the case of 16'.

The good news is, these contracts from guys like Lynn and Morrison are all off the books after this season except Reed.

Why are the homegrowns always stunted by the time they get to The Show? I watched some of the Yankees/Braves game today. Besides some New York's pitchers and Stanton, most of their starters are from the farm.

The Twins, by comparison, have a few maybes in Berrios, Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Kepler.

Correct. And if the Twins had matched or even slightly exceeded 6/126 Darvish still wouldn't have choosen the Twins. Historically the Twins have been cheap that that really wasn't the issue with Darvish nor will it be the issue with Machado or Harper when neither of them opens the 2019 Campaign with the Twins (quite frankly, the fact that some of you are putting those names out there as if they are even in the realm of possibilities is lunacy, but I digress).

The REAL reason why the Twins don't land these types of free agents is because the perception about the Twins among players around the league is that is it is a Micky Mouse operation. I mean honestly think about it? If you had no connection to MN or the Twins why in the fuck would you want to play for them if you had comparable offers from teams like the Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees or quite honestly almost any other team? The answer is that you probably wouldn't even talk to them unless their offer simply blew all of the other ones out of the water and did so by a country mile.

During this millennia, the Indians have been every bit as cheap as the Twins if not more so, yet the were able to sign a big time high end free agent in Encarnacion before the 2017 season. Did the Indians become less cheap during that offseaon and did that allow them to lure Encarnacion?? Nope, playing in the World Series the season before all of the sudden got his attention and he had a desire to play for an organization that was built well and built to win. In other words, the World Series appearance gave the organization a ton of street cred and equity that it previously did not have and it allowed them to get a player of his caliber rather than having to settle for second rate free agents (Hughes, Reed, Nolasco, Santana, Morrison, Lynn) that the Twins still have to settle for. As long as the Twins are perceived to be a Mickey Mouse operation, they will never get a truly high end free agent (Kershaw, Machado, Harper), they just won't.

Any number of reasons. The prospects could be overrated by the scouts (or numbers guys), it could be the coaching at the minors or majors, some guys just can't handle the pressure and in Sano's case, he got fat and he changed his approach at the plate for the worse.

I'm not worried so much about the Twins not signing the tier-1 free agents. They're getting mega contracts (especially pitchers) and most are not even coming close to living up to them. A lot of people in "Twins Territory" wanted Darvish. Well, he signed for 6/$126 and has been dreadful so far this year and is spending time on the DL. It's looking like a miserable contract.

The thing that does piss me off is the team not spending the money to keep players like Torii Hunter and Johan Santana. THAT pisses me off more than anything. Those two players were the cornerstone of your team and you're too cheap to bring them back? We saw what Hunter did with this team the one year he was back. There was LIFE to the team. There was dance parties. Now, it's Brian Dozier giving his yearly "players only" meeting.

Then when they DO spend money, (like someone said above), they give out these completely stupid contracts to the Hughes', Pelfrys', Nolascos', etc. and then go around and cheap out on everything else.

Another thing that gets me going is the team's inability to make a move with players. Dozier should have been gone 2 years ago. Now, I'm not saying that you take a box of lint for the guy but now you're not going to get jack shit for him and you'll probably have to over-pay in the free agent market if they want to bring him back.

They NEVER strike while the iron is hot and by the time they do make a move, they get pennies on the dollar.

Same goes for ACQUIRING talent. Every other successful playoff team in this league goes and gets one or two players who they think might put them over the edge. The Twins......do nothing. Even back in the mid-2000's....they never made a trade for a big named half season rental that might allow them to beat the Yankees or overcome the Angels.

They're so afraid of trading prospects for a rental and most of the time, the prospect doesn't work out anyway.

This team has NEVER swung for the fences. Just like on the field, they're so giddy about an opposite field base hit aka "The Twins Way" and they don't care for the big home run and tried to bring in a big piece.

Agreed!!

Also to the people saying "We can't sign the mega stars" which I still find BS (Almost every MLB team has signed a top free agent over the last 20 years) You could still sign a tier 2 guy to get your fan base excited about. They sign straight turds though

How the hell can that be, for over a decade. Somebody here pointed out the Twins havent had a real Ace since Santana. Thats a decade. That pisses me off. Every other team has a a real Ace but the Twins. Christ, even the Marlins and Rays had one. Absurd

How the hell can that be, for over a decade. Somebody here pointed out the Twins havent had a real Ace since Santana. Thats a decade. That pisses me off. Every other team has a a real Ace but the Twins. Christ, even the Marlins and Rays had one. Absurd
I pointed it out. There is no excuse at this point. ZERO!

Also to the people saying "We can't sign the mega stars" which I still find BS
(Almost every MLB team has signed a top free agent over the last 20 years) You could still sign a tier 2 guy to get your fan base excited about. They sign straight turds though
So you honestly believe that Kershaw, Machado, or Harper would sign here if the Twins offer was the same or virtually the same as say the offers from the Yankees or Cubs? I call BS on that, no offense. The Twins would have to give them 3/4 of a billion dollars to even get their attention, they don't want to play for the Twins and I don't blame them, how could you? If you want to blame the Pohlad's and hold them accountable for fostering and creating an organization that commands very little if any respect at all among the players in this league that is one thing, I won't disagree with you there. It is that reason, not the money, this is preventing them from getting high end free agents.

I agree with that. I can't imagine anyone who cares about winning coming here. If you did get one, yes you would severely have to over pay but other clubs do it. It might be a bad move but also maybe what it would take to show players this is a group willing to try and win. I know it's never going to happen but a man can dream.

Are the Twins serious about trying to get back in race?

The Twins have won five in a row and Cleveland has lost three straight. Is that enough of a reason to pay a bit more attention to the Twins as we near the All-Star break?

By Michael Rand JULY 10, 2018 — 8:11AM

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of The Cooler, where both contenders and pretenders are welcome to stay. Let’s get to it:

*The Twins embarked on what proved to be a disastrous road trip to Chicago and Milwaukee with a 34-40 record, in second place by 7.5 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central race.

They proceeded to go 1-8 on the trip, ending at 35-48 and 12 games back on July 4. We all wrote baseball versions of obituaries and grumbled that the Twins hadn’t even remained relevant until Vikings training camp – the bare minimum required of a baseball team during a long, hot summer.

What happened next has, for me, been the cause for maybe half of one arched eyebrow.

The Twins came home after that trip and got to play the two very worst teams in baseball — the Orioles and Royals. They swept four games from Baltimore and just defeated Kansas City in the series opener on Monday. That’s five wins in a row against teams on pace to lose more than 115 games (no joke), but at the very least we have to give the Twins credit for a bit of resiliency.

If they had gone 3-2 in this stretch, for instance, I wouldn’t be writing about them today. And combined with three consecutive Cleveland losses, they’re now back within 8.5 games at 40-48 — worse off than they were before that road trip, with fewer games left to make up ground, but with the benefit of some wind behind their backs.

Whether it’s the recency bias of five wins or the manner in which they’ve been playing even against bad teams — with winning baseball plays such as Eduardo Escobar’s huge snare of a seemingly sure two-run single early last night — the Twins are at least going to make us pay casual attention for a little while longer.

They still have less than a 1 percent chance of winning the division, per MLB.com’s playoff projections. Winning the wild card is even less likely given Seattle’s surprising season. But one is not zero. There are six games left on this home stand before the All-Star break. If they can shave another game or two before that pause, the eyebrow could raise a little more.

They've won 5 straight by beating the two worst teams in the league as the article stated.

Why do we do this every time they go on a little hot streak?

The team isn't going anywhere. SELL. SELL. SELL.

The AL Central is crap and winning it means nothing. We would get swept in the first round.

At this point I would get what ever we could for guys like Escobar, Dozier, Rodney, Gibson, Mauer, Lynn, Morrison.

I know they wont trade Mauer. No one is going to want Morrison or Lynn.

Might be able to get a mid level prospect or two for Escobar and Dozier.

I personally would rather move Sano to first next year and keep Eduardo. He has been great for this team. Dozier is gone in free agency so lets get something for him.

Again, we arent going to get anything good for these guys because they are all on expiring deals and arent world beaters but at this point very few will be back.

I'm worried that they will be stuck in a root for awhile. Buxton and Sano were supposed to mean so much to them. Unfortunate, because Berrios and Romero look like they can be a formidable 1/2.

This team hasn't done anything but get "Swept in the first round" in years. What is it 25 years and getting out of rd #1 once? 2003 was the last time correct? Before that was a LONG time also. I think I would take that right about now.

Sal says sell. So we should sell.

I said to a coworker of mine after the Twins won last Thursday: "Watch them run off 9 of 11 before the break and it will be nothing but a big tease."

I am not selling pieces they think can help the team next year. I am just saying this year is a wash and get what you can. If you can get a handful of prospects and 1 or 2 can help you in any way in the future, then you do it and hopefully build a team that can get us out of the first round in the next few years.

i agree. if they could climb back to .500 before the trade deadline i think they could still put on a push for the division. as long as there are games to play and you can make a somewhat plausible scenario where games could matter in september i think you still try to put a respectable lineup out there. santana returns on sunday i think.

Santana is doing another minor game Sunday....Rochester this time.
If all goes well, he'll probably be added to the MLB squad after the AS break.
