He's not good enough to move the needle for this team IMO. If you could do something like move Coyle or Nino for him straight up I'd do it, but it will almost certainly take more than that to get him. Plus, he's got some character issues as it's been reported that most of the Avalanche players were happy to see him go despite being one of their better offensive forwards. To answer your question though, yes I think they could as he's paid 6 million. You'd have to move a player on roster that isn't making peanuts to get it done (Nino would work well for this) as part of the package to get it done. It should also be noted that his current contract expires at the end of the season so if you traded for him you'd have to have some sort of assurance that you'd be able to retain him on a long term basis. Having said all that, should they do it because they logistically could? I don't think so.

On a related note, Colorado holds Ottawa's first round selection in this year's draft as part of the trade that sent Duchene to Ottawa to begin with. We all better hope they do a bit better in the second half of the season because right now they have a great chance to score that pick in a year in which a franchise changing player (Jack Hughes) will be available. The Wild certainly didn't help to decrease those odds in the regard tonight by rolling over for a Detroit team that will also likely be in the running for that pick.

This. Keep this core together for what, a fringe playoff shot? They should move Staal and Spergeon by the deadline and get as much value as they can preferably in draft capital. The next tough decision they are faced with is whether to move Zucker before his no move clause goes into effect. It's time for management and ownership to swallow their pride and realize that this core is not going to get it done. It would mean a rough year next year, but they really need to do this now. Granlund and Dumba are solid and become your older core after a couple year rebuild.

Obviously they can't do much about Parise and Suter as they will be expensive pieces that they will have to get as much production out of them as they can for the foreseeable future. It needs to be about acquiring young talent. I love the fit of Kaprisov if he ever gets to come over with Granny. Next season you get out of Koivu and Coyles contracts, but would move Nino or Coyle in the right deal too.

They are in a tough spot right now with an aging core and a very bare prospect cupboard. A guy like Matt Duchene, both doesn't move the needle and would cost assets that they very badly need to keep and need to hit on in the draft. The Senators very foolishly sold the farm for Duch and aren't going to trade him for the peanuts that would make sense for the Wild to give away to acquire a guy like that.
