Thoughts on 2020

Post by Stu Pedaso »

Re-watching some games from 2018 & 19, especially the 49ers games. Everyone knows our oline needs to get better, but really we ran the ball fairly well. We don't have the muscle to do the 3rd or 4th & 1 power dives, but our pitches to Cook and pulling lineman really open some holes on the run in space.

We've invested in our oline slowly (not fast enough for most people) with adding former 1st rounder Reif (on his tail end now), 2nd rounder O'Neil, 3rd rounder Elflein (hasn't panned out yet), and 1st rounder Bradbury. If Dru Samia and Ezra Cleveland pan out, that will surely help.

I think our bigger needs are improving the secondary with much better coverage and physical play. We've been soft there. And we need to improve our run defense. We need to be able to handle physical run teams like the 49ers.

So basically this draft class will determine if we rise up a notch or fall back. We've had success in the past with Griffen in the 4th and Hunter in the 3rd. We really need Wonnum, Lynch and/or Willekes to come through. I'm really hoping at least two of the db's we selected can be stars as well.

It was something to see San Fran go from 4-12 to 13-3 with a few key additions and healthy players. They have so much swagger now. Confidence can be important.

I felt last years secondary played pretty good in the playoffs against the 9ers and Saints.
