Absolutely no issue with giving Adam Thielen a new deal, of course, but the Vikings are now paying two WR’s $30+ million per season, their QB $28 million per season, and their head coach wants them to run the ball more

Good for him.
Wanted an extention for him, but a little pricy.

I would absolutely love it if they landed Lawrence. He will be a top 3 QB IMO. I believe Griffin, Joseph, and Reiff will be gone. I'm not so sure Waynes doesn't get a long term deal done. I think Rhodes is about to play his last season in MN.HeHateMe wrote: ↑Fri Apr 12, 2019 4:56 pmGriffen, Rudolph, Reiff, Waynes, Joseph... the Vikings need to tank in 2020 anyways... we all know what the prize is going to be.Ash Ketchum wrote: ↑Fri Apr 12, 2019 4:15 pm Cap number for 2019 will be lowered, but we’re deferring a bunch of salaries for the next few years.
Will be interesting to see who is let go starting next year and beyond.
I would try to lose all 16 games.
As for Theilen, that is a ton of money, but glad he's a Viking for life.

Where is the home town discount? I don't like this contract. There have been some bad contracts recently.

If they continue that path with the OL, the team will never be more than a playoff one and done team. They need to draft and develop their oline.

But didn't this bring his cap hit down for this year to clear room for rookies?

How did they manage to sign him when they gave all that money to Cousins? I thought moves like this would be impossible

He was already under contract through 2020. So is Kirk Cousins.PurpleFloyd wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2019 10:32 am How did they manage to sign him when they gave all that money to Cousins? I thought moves like this would be impossible
Kirk Cousins is currently scheduled to be a UFA in 2021 and the Vikings have 0 commitment to him at that time.
Now, we haven’t yet seen all the details of Thielen’s new contract, so I think everyone should wait until they are out before we pass judgment, but if it is a contract extension (as has been reported), that means it kicks in after his current contract was scheduled to expire. That means all this money hits in 2021, when kirks contract is off the books and no longer relevant to the Vikings cap conversation.

Re: Thielen 4 year extension done
If only he had a quarterback that was as good as he is.
I would have waited a year to do this deal, but I understand he needs to get paid. We threw the ball a ton and had lofty stats, but we missed the playoffs and ended our season losing at home to scrubs with the season on the line. This team needs to prove a ton this season. With these big contracts we are back into the "All-In" BS of the Spielman era. How many times have we been told this is the year so lets go balls to the walls?
Then we end up with a fired coaching staff and Rick Spielman doing the same BS.

Weird that you would pay a guy that much that needs to be taught how to run routes by the QB during a game??

Re: Thielen 4 year extension done
I still don't like this extension. Hopefully there is a out after a couple year's.
This teams window is now. I'm all for keeping Diggs, Hunter etc.. (Young guys)
But Thielen is going to be 29 before this season starts. If they don't get it done with Cousins, it's going to be a whole new regime and you are going to be paying top dollar for a 31 year old WR and looking to rebuild a bit.

I think you are jealous of the Vikings WR's. I think GB should worry about theirs. Isn't Geronimo one of your top 2 wr's right now? HAHAHAChuck North wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2019 1:24 pm

Thielen worn out? That's what Berriero phrased today. Said when's enough enough.
This was a cute story at one time. He's now being payed like one of the best in the game though. The expectations have changed.

Re: Thielen 4 year extension done
Contract details. Interesting.
All this is according to sportrac.com, which is usually pretty reliable.
Anyway, they say "Adam Thielen signed a 4 year, $64,200,000 contract with the Minnesota Vikings, including a $9,000,000 signing bonus, $33,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $16,050,000. In 2019, Thielen will earn a base salary of $805,000, a signing bonus of $9,000,000, a roster bonus of $4,400,000 and a workout bonus of $100,000, while carrying a cap hit of $8,105,000 and a dead cap value of $16,105,000."
There were some reports that his cap number would go down for 2019 after this deal, but that didn't happen. It went up. By $5,000.
His current contract + extension break down like this for the next 6 seasons:
Year --- Cap Hit --- dead cap (if cut)
2019 --- $8.105M -- $16.105M
2020 --- $12.8M --- $8.2M
2021 --- $13.4M --- $5.4M
2022 --- $14.45M --- $3.6M
2023 --- $15.45M --- $1.8M
2024 --- $14.6M ---- $0
So that becomes very team friendly after 2020, if we needed to move in a different direction. A $5.4M is a pill, but it's one you can swallow if you must. It would be really weird if he was cut after 2020. That was the year his prior contract was set to expire anyway. It would basically mean he got a raise, but not extended.
The site isn't 100% clear on what money other than the $9M signing bonus constitutes that $33M in guarantees, but my best guess is some of the early years base salary is fully guaranteed or something. But having a contract this large and long (effectively, with the merging of the two contracts) with so little guaranteed money at the end is nice for the team.
I've also read that there's up to another $9M in incentives to possibly be earned in this contract. Not sure how that pays out or how it affects the cap, but an additional $9M over 6 years is only $1.5M/year, so it shouldn't cripple us either way. And it's probably for things like 1,000 yard seasons or pro-bowl or all-pro honors. So it'd be really good for us if he got those anyway.
Good deal for him. He gets a raise right now to match his productivity and has a nice pay rate and is locked up long-term with his childhood favorite team for as long as he is healthy and productive. Good deal for the Vikes because it doesn't handcuff them long-term if he gets hurt or falls off early. I'm optimistic he'll age well because he doesn't have the miles on him that some WRs do and that he's such a technician and has such good hands that he should be able to stay productive even if he loses half a step in speed/quickness.
Go Thielen! Go Vikes!
