Nick Easton Signs w/Saints 4 for $24M

Post by Sid Hartman »

RT @caplannfl: (1) NEWS: #Saints and free agent C/G Nick Easton agreed to terms on a contract, per his reps @JLSports3.

Once the contract is completed, it's expected to be a 4-year, $24m deal. Structure of deal unclear at this point.

I can’t believe he would pick the Saints over the Vikings!

Wow! This guy wasn't good enough for some posters here. I guess Payton doesn't know what he's doing /s

That deal is ridiculous though. There is such a shortage of olinemen that Easton even cashed in.

I wanted this guy back.

Agreed. I was kinda hoping they’d get him back. He was at least serviceable. Much better then the two turnstiles they put out there last year. I have a feeling it’s going to be a shit show on the line once again. But hey! We still have Barr and Griffin! I hope this Kline guy is at least serviceable, if he’s in fact the bargain buy. Everything I’ve read says he was dog shit last year. I honestly don’t know much about him.

I really don't blame him. Good for him getting his payday and going to a place that doesn't switch offensive coordinators every year. We have had alot of dysfunctional things happen offensively and now he gets to look good probably no matter what blocking for a quarterback that gets rid of the ball as quick as anybody ever has. Easton was an average guard, and an average guard would have been nice compared to what we trotted out last year.

Signing Nick Easton to 24 million is top 10 GM stuff? Can you keep your trolling consistent.

Let's make fun of your squad. You signed two sack specialists Za'Darious and Preston Smith, who COMBINED have 44 sacks. Danielle Hunter has 40 career sacks. COMBINED they ONLY have 4 more than Hunter.

And this packer trolls wants to make fun of our GM? BWAHAHAHA!

Jesus, this is getting crazy. That contract is too high but at the end of the day we have even less overall depth now. We need 3 startable olinemen at this point (2 starters and a decent backup)....wow. I hope they have a plan. Can't blame the Cousins contract when you had options to trade a cut players...hmm.

It's a shame we didn't retain him, it would have been like signing a FA starter.

I wanted Easton to return on min contract but that's an average of 6 million a year for a guy that went down with a season ending injury on a superbowl run. Followed by another season ending neck injury before it even began.

Didn't think that kind of money was on the table for him but it was certain that once he went down in 2017 the line wasn't the same. Regardless of his false start penalties, he was able to dent people. I liked him as a possible starter/backup on a min contract.

Give major credit to his agent... that or lack of decent Oline on FA market.

WOW -shocked at the deal. He may be their starting center which wasn't going to happen in Minn. Can't believe how much they are going to pay him though.
GM Spielman:
  • Record 62-48-2 (.559 winning %)
  • Playoffs 1-3
  • 7 years - reached playoffs 3 times.
  • Winner of the North 2 of last 4 years
Zimmer is 48-33-1

With the OL that Spielman is going to trot out there this year, the two stiffs the Packers signed, they could pass Hunter in sacks this season!

Now tell us all there is nothing to worry about. Spielman will draft 3 starting Pro Bowl OL!

Exactly. Let the Saints have Easton at that price. Woof.

I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to hope that the Vikings fill other needs in free agency, and are forced to fix the OL via the draft. If they take OL with their first 2 picks, they could come out with a young, cheap OL that improves year to year.

Right now comp pick wise we are looking at a 3 and a 5/6 depending on actual details of Easton deal. Stephen signing cancels out losing Murray. We just need to hope Suh gets less $ per year than Richardson otherwise we drop to a 4 rather than 3

Now we are losing guys we needed, but most were meh about. Even our middle range lineman who we had planned on having are leaving. A guy who went on IR in training camp just defected. Good job GM Spielman. Unless you hated our Easton and loved his replacements, but we had games with like 22 yards rushing and the middle of our line held things back about as good as levy on the Mississippi in March after the snowiest month in February history.

Although, I just gotta say it, this doesn't bode well for the elite offensive line many were hoping to give Cousins this year. Just a little pressure on the first round pick now to go offensive line. As every team in the NFL who needs a line jumps in front of our spot to pick one because we have enormous holes to fill.

And no money left to fill them. :brick:

At least we have Barr and Everson back. Whew.... :scooter:

I never thought Easton was that good. I was always hoping that we moved on from him but that was under the premise that we had better options. He was never going to be a backup and yet, he isn't good enough to be a starter. (He is much better than Compton and Remmers but then again, so are many college guards).

If the take a Cody Ford or Bradbury at 18 and hopefully get their LG, then they should be okay. Easton was never going to be "depth".

Easton never makes it through a season. Now with disc issues in his neck, for a Center -Not Good.

Saints should have grabbed Sully but maybe the price was even higher.

I feel like the exact same thing was said about Sully. He got to play in the Super Bowl this year didn't he?

Easton will be 27. Sullivan 34.

When it comes right down to it both players are below average...Sully/Easton not only that both are injury prone. Neither a difference maker.

Looks like another year of garbage interior line play. The Vikings are banking on getting 2 starting guards in the draft? Good luck. There is no guarantee that they can draft a starting caliber player. Even if you take a guy at #1 he could be garbage. Also, they need depth and backups as well. Tall order.

You know how many good players get cut from after the draft until camps open? A ton.
